The mass media

The mass media are a means capable of conveying information to a wide audience.
The term was coined together with the expression "mass communication" in the
first half of the 20th century in the Anglo-Saxon context. According to McQuail's
definition, the"mass media", are means designed to implement forms of
communication "open, at a distance, with many people in a short period of time". In
other words, mass communication (that class of communication phenomena that is
based on the use of the media) is made up of extremely complex organizations
which aim to produce and disseminate messages directed to a very inclusive public,
including differentiated sectors of the population. The most old example of mass
media is the movable type printing by Gutenberg (between 1455 and 1457) in 15th
century.
What is one of the big differences between old medias and the new medias?
Traditional medias allow businesses to reach out to a broad target audience through
billboards, print advertisements, TV commercials, and more. By comparison, new
medias allow businesses to target a narrow target audience through social media,
paid online ads, and search results.
The new medias are digital, interactive, hypertextual, networked, virtual and
simulated. These are the six key characteristics that distinguish new medias from old
medias.
