That’s nice.

Checking of Assignments

Pass your assignments! (Everybody submitted)

In your previous lesson, you learned about some patterns used in developing Narration, description and definition.
a paragraph; what are those again?

Very good, can you explain how can we use those patterns? Ma’am narration is about telling a story in chronological
order, when, where and what happened in the story.

When we say description, we describe a certain object

using sensory images, how it looks, sound, taste, feel and
smell.

In definition ma’am, it tends to explain a particular word in

order for the readers or listeners to understand the specific
term used.

Precisely!
LESSON PROPER
Activity(motivation)

(Students will count off one to two)

Analysis

Okay now, we are going to have an activity, it will be a debate, you will be
grouped into two and after that you are going to proceed with your
groupmates and you will pick a topic that you need to defend, so let’s count
off one to two
(Students will count off one to two)
Set of Topics:
A. School uniforms are important for students' learning.
B. School uniforms don't matter with students learning.

Now let’s start

On your Activity how did you defend your topic statement?

Ma’am in order to defend our topic statement we give

explanation about it.
Alright! And you give examples, right?
Yes ma’am.

And today we are going to tackle another pattern in developing a paragraph.

What comes to your mind when you hear the word exemplification?
Ma’am it is about giving examples.

Abstraction

Correct! Exemplification or Illustration is the most common and effective

pattern to explain an idea or point, just like what you did in your debate
activity, where you defend the idea that was assigned to your group by stating
examples.

Exemplification
 is the action of giving examples
 Commonly used in academic writing

There are several ways of referring to examples, not just the expression for
example or e.g. (although these are the most common)
Commonly used abbreviations
 f.e. / e.g. – for example
 i.e. – that is (to say); in other words
 viz. – namely; it is/they are
 e.g. There are four language skills, viz. listening, speaking, reading
and writing.

Now let’s try,

Read the text again and circle all the expressions which have the same
meaning as for example and draw a line under all the examples.

1. For example, many birds utter warning calls.

2. Such as expressions of anger, fear and pleasure
3. For instance, animals’ cries are not articulate
4. For example, the kind of structure given by the contrast
between vowels and consonants
5. Illustration of this is a soldier who can say
6. e.g., ‘tanks approaching from the north’
7. The great tit is a case in point

Very good class!

On the other hand, we also have Classification, what does it mean?

Great, Classification is used when a writers needs to sort out or arrange From the word itself ma’am, it is about classifying certain
subjects to groups or categories based on their common shared characteristics concept.

For example, please read the paragraph.

Two of the most popular types of movies are action-

adventure movies and romantic comedies. An action-
adventure movie is exciting and has a story that focuses on
a hero that has to do something difficult or dangerous.
Some action-adventure movies are about superheroes, while
others tell stories based on real experiences from history.
Romantic comedy movies are another type of movie. These
movies tell a story about love and introduce us to
interesting characters. These movies make the problems in
a relationship look funny instead of dramatic. Both action
adventure and romantic comedy movies are popular
Okay now, look at the underlined sentences, what did you observed? because they are entertaining and interesting for the
audience.

Exactly! And that is an example of classification in a paragraph it was

classified the movie based on its types whether it is action- adventure and Ma’am different types of movies was mentioned.
romantic comedy.

Classification
 Dividing something into groups, classes or categories
 Classification is normally made according to a criterion or several
criteria (e.g. age, size, number...)
Here are some transitional expressions in writing effective classification
paragraphs: classified as, one kind, the last group, another kind, final type,
the first category, are categorized as, the next part.

Vocabulary aid
 Useful nouns: criterion/criteria, basis/bases, features,
characteristics, categories, classes, groups, types, kinds, sorts,
species, breeds, orders, divisions, families, members sub-
categories/classes/divisions/groups
Useful verbs:
 to classify, categorize, group, divide into, arrange in, put into,
distinguish (between), differentiate (between/from)
 To sub-classify, sub-categorize, sub-group or sub-divide

Where can we use exemplification?

Very good, how about classification?

Ma’am it will be used in developing a paragraph by giving
Remember that you can use both exemplification and classification in examples or illustrations.
developing a paragraph by simply identifying categories on a particular
subject by providing examples or illustration to explain and clarify meaning. Ma’am it will be used in developing a paragraph by
clarifying an idea or a topic.

by substituting one word for another is a soldier who can say...
The number of signals that an animal can make is very limited: the great tit is __________________.
