Saint Lucia is an island country in the Americas, located in the Caribbean Sea. It is a member
of the Caribbean Community, the Organization of American States, the International
Organization of La Francophonie and the Commonwealth of Nations. Saint Lucia is one of the
Windward Islands, the name comes from Saint Lucia of Syracuse.

Saint Lucia is an island of volcanic origin, with a mountainous landscape covered by tropical
vegetation, being named one of the most beautiful in the West Indies, the country has a fauna
and flora typical of the neotropical ecozone, with some endemic species.

Mostly the waters of its western coast are home to corals, jellyfish, sperm whales, sea
urchins, sharks, sea horses and an infinity of fish. In addition to 20 different species of whales,
such as the pilot whale and the humpback whale, and also a large number of turtles, thanks to
the protection provided by local activists who fight against their hunting. It has more than a
thousand species of plants and 150 of birds. Although due to its small extension, there are no
mammals.

Tourism is vital to the economy of Saint Lucia, since it is the sector that contributes the most
to it. Its economic importance is expected to continue to increase as the banana market
becomes more competitive. Tourism tends to be more important during the dry season
(January to April). Saint Lucia tends to be popular due to its tropical climate, its landscapes,
and its large number of beaches and resorts.
Other tourist attractions are the Diamond Botanical Gardens, the volcano-city Sulfur Springs
(in Soufrière), the twin peaks "The Pitons", the jungles and the Pigeon Island National Park,
which is where Fort Rodney is located, an ancient British military base.

The culture of Saint Lucia has strong African influences, a product of immigration and the
slave trade that the island has historically suffered.

The official language is English but Kweyol and some largely French-derived creole languages,
such as Creole, which developed because of French colonization, are also spoken. In fact, it is
common to hear news services and political speeches in that language, which it shares with
the island of Dominica.

The gastronomic tradition of Santa Lucía is typical of the entire Caribbean area, with bases of
fresh fish cooked with different spices, chicken meat and rice.
