The Role Of Consumers in Consumer Protection

WHAT IS CONSUMER
PROTECTION?

Consumer Protection can be defined as; the


protection of consumers of goods and
services against low quality or dangerous
products and services which could
potentially harm or pose a threat to one's
health.

As consumers of goods and services, we play a key role in consumer protection. Within society consumers
have rights and responsibilities to their own safeguard and protection against exploitation and harm.

Consumers have 8 basic rights:

1. The right to satisfaction of basic needs

• As a consumer you have the right to access basic and essential goods and services which are needed to
maintain a good standard of living.

2. The right to safety

• As a consumer you have the right to be protected against anything which is hazardous to your health or
life.
3. The right to be informed

• As a consumer you have the right to be given the information needed to make
informed and conscious decisions.

4. The right to choose

• As a consumer you have the right to be able to select from a range of products
and services at different price levels with the assurance of consistency in level of
quality.

5. The right to be heard

• As a consumer have the right to your opinions and concerns being represented
and heard in the execution of government policy and in the development of
products and services.
6. The right to redress

• As a consumer you have the right to receive a fair settlement of just claims, including
unsatisfactory service, low quality goods and compensation for misrepresentation.

7. The right to consumer education

• As a consumer you have the right to acquire knowledge and skills needed to make
informed and confident decisions about goods and services, while being aware of your
rights and responsibilities as a consumer.

8. The right to a healthy environment

• As a consumer have the right to live and work in an environment which is non-
hazardous to the well-being you or future generations.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF CONSUMERS
IN CONSUMER PROTECTION
We also have individual responsibilities as consumers in our protection. The
responsibilities of consumers in consumer protection are:

1. The responsibility to report to the proper authorities (ex. Consumer Affairs


Commission, The Fair Trade Commission) violations of their rights.

2. The responsibility to be wise when making decisions pertaining to products


and services.

• Consumers have the responsibility to make sure they interpret and understand
the information given to them on products or services to make informed decisions
ensuring their health and well-being is being considered.
3. The responsibility to be informed on the quality and price of a good or service
before purchasing.

• Consumers have the responsibility of researching goods and services to inform


themselves on there quality and price before making the decision to purchase it.

4. The responsibility to carry out the necessary checks on any product or service they
intend to purchase thoroughly.

• Consumers have the responsibility of carefully carry out the necessary checks on
any product or service they intend to purchase thoroughly to ensure it is of acceptable
standard and that it will complete the task it was intended for.
