TASK ANALYSIS

K-2 3-5 6-8 HS

SKILL: Long Serve

VISUAL DESCRIPTION: Hold birdie in front of body with non-dominant hand and racquet
behind body with dominant hand in forehand position. Swing racquet forward and
simultaneously dropping the birdie straight down, contacting the birdie around knee height.
Finish the shot with racquet arm up in front of your body and racquet hand almost touching
earlobe.

Standing behind the service line with non-dominant foot slightly forward and dominant foot
back, holding the birdie in the non-dominant hand and the racket in forehand position in your
dominant hand. Bring the racquet behind body to a 4o’clock position shifting weight back to
heel of dominant foot. Turn body slightly to face opposite court and bring birdie just above
knee. Swing your racquet arm forward keeping tight wrist position on racquet,
simultaneously releasing the birdie with non-dominant hand. As the racquet swings through
to front of body making contact with the birdie sending it deep into the opposing teams court,
finishing the swing with dominant hand and racquet beside opposite ear.

4 Swing your racquet arm forward keeping wrist tight on racquet, Swing*
simultaneously releasing the birdie with non-dominant hand and
shifting weight to front (non-dom) foot.
5 Contact the birdie around knee level with face of racquet slightly Contact*
less than 90 degrees and body weight completely on front foot.
6 Follow-through up and across body, bringing racquet hand in line High FT*
with opposite ear.

1 Birdie not making it the proper Ensure student has proper grip, keeping the
distance. racquet locked in position through duration of
the swing, the angle of which the birdie is
contacted by racquet face is proper, the student
is following through properly.
2 Serve is going into the opposite court. Ensure the students body is set up properly in
their stance and that their follow through of the
swing is in the direction of the court they are
aiming to hit.
3 Hitting the net and not making it Timing of the swing and release need to be
over. adjusted and/or the height at which student is
making contact with birdie needs to be increased
most likely if they are hitting the net.
