Content: Finding the Sumof the Terms of an Arithmetic Sequence

DISCUSSIONS:
An arithmetic sequence is a set of terms in which any 2
consecutive terms have a common difference. Each term in the sequence,
except the 1st one, is obtained by adding the common difference to the
previous term.

The equation an = a1 + (n-1) d

where:
an =nth term
a1 = first term
n = number of terms
d = common difference

is used to compute for the nth term in an arithmetic sequence.

The formula

n
Sn = (a1 + an )
2

or

n
Sn = [2a1 + (n – 1)d]
2

where:
n = number of terms
a1 = first term
an=nth term
d = common difference

are the two equations used to find the sum of the 1 stn terms of an
arithmetic sequence.

To sum the numbers in an arithmetic sequence, you can manually add up all
the numbers. This is impractical, however, when the sequence contains a large
amount of numbers. Instead, you can quickly find the sum of any arithmetic
sequence by multipying the average of the first and last term by the number of
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
terms in the sequence.
Note: The activities included here will be used only when needed.

A.Multiple Choice
