Work Situation
Overview

Work situation
Instructions:
1) Read aloud the situation below.
Natchaya joined the electronics company ThaiEl five years ago as an
operator. After a couple of years, Natchaya noticed that other operators had
been promoted to become supervisors, even though they had not worked
for ThaiEl for as long as she had. This made her very upset because she
also wanted a promotion.
When Natchaya asked her only friend at the company about what she could
do to get a promotion, her friend encouraged her to take more responsibility
in her current work and to demonstrate that she was ready to take on a more
senior role. However, Natchaya hesitated. Getting a promotion would mean
that she would have to learn new things and work a lot harder. She would
also have to deal with all the problems that could arise at the production
floor. Perhaps she didn’t want the promotion after all. 15

ORIENTATION MODULE
In Business is an innovative, peer-to-peer learning programme that helps enterprises develop the skills needed to improve productivity,
competitiveness, and working conditions. In association with the International Labour Organization and under license by National
Employers’ Organizations, In Business is delivered by a range of business associations and institutions throughout Asia and the Pacific.
The In Business module on Problem solving trains participants to analyse problems, develop alternatives, and evaluate solutions.
Through a series of interactive sessions, participants will learn new tools and apply them to a realistic case study. Group discussions will
take into consideration real-life barriers to identifying problems and implementing solutions.
