M4 Post task

1. Describe the appropriate steps to do, including the liner or base to use, when you
found out during operative procedure and caries removal that the cavity depth extends
just 0.5mm into the dentin. Specify for both amalgam and composite restorative
material. 5 pts.

● A 0.5mm depth means a shallow depth. In amalgam restoration first, make a

cavity preparation while removing the carious lesion. Then put a cavity varnish.
Next is to mix the amalgam alloy called trituration and dispense the amalgam to
the preparation. Last is to polish the preparation.

● In composite restoration a 0.5mm depth also means a shallow depth. Like

amalgam restoration the first step is also to make a cavity preparation while
removing the carious lesion then put etchant on the enamel and if dentin is
shown also put there. Next step is apply the bonding agent then put the
composite and light cure the restoration.

2. Decide what steps will be appropriate if the cavity has only 0.5mm of remaining
dentin before entering the pulp. Indicate both amalgam and composite filling materials in
your answer. 5 pts.

● Just like any other restoration shallow or deep the first step to do is make a cavity
preparation while removing the carious lesion. Second step is to put a dental
liner, specifically calcium hydroxide followed by a base either of the two Zinc
Oxide Eugenol or Glass Ionomer bases. After putting dental liner, put cavity
varnish then mix the amalgam alloy (trituration). Next is dispense the amalgam
into the preparation and polish.

● For dental composite restoration make a cavity preparation while removing the
carious lesion. Followed by putting etchant on the cavity on the enamel and
dentin. Applying Calcium hydroxide or Glass ionomer cement and the bonding
agent is the next step. After put the dental composite and light cure the
restoration.
