Smart villages - Increasing technology reach to narrow down the bridge between rural and urban India

1. Describe the problem that you want to solve

Identify the usage of internet in the rural area and enhance the required type to connectivity. We also need to
identify that how and what are all the things will be involved for a smart village and what percentage of
technology required which requires the IoT to be implemented.

Have listed the details of the Smart village segregating it into social, Agriculture and home categories.

Smart Transformation aspects

Social Agriculture Home and Utilities
Smart Education Smart Farming Smart House/Village
Smart Security Smart Irrigation Smart Energy
Smart Smart water and waste
Infotainment Smart Inventory management
Smart Smart water and waste
Governance management

2. Give reasons for choosing the problem

To find what type of transformation required and what will be amount of technology usage will is expected.
Smart village doesn’t mean the existence of network, we need to find where and what type of network we need
and what are all things will be utilising the smart technologies. Based on our analysis we need to find the users
to concentrate and what type of package can be provided. The package with effective and affordable plans can
be recommended to the network providers based on the outcome.

3. Identify the stakeholders

The participants of the change will be including both the public, private and government authorities. We can list
down the stakeholders based on the business and transformation to be planned. The Users, Network Providers,
Smart technology implementors, and the government will be listed under the stakeholders.

4. Identify the decision-making environment for the given problem

We can do a Multi criteria decision, to find out which kind of network is required and what is the percentage of
increase in the usage if it turns to Smart Villages. Why we have chosen the muti criteria method is because we
need to first verify what is type of usage, what will be the are of usage and which network needs to be
strengthened.

We can take the data available to show the internet usage in rural India.

as per the KPMG 2014 report the internet access point across village
Main Points All Points
Cyber Café 26% 49%
Mobile Phone 38% 48%
Home 27% 36%
Friends Home 2% 19%
Other Public installed Computer 2% 7%
Post office 3% 3%
The Usage Report states the usage of internet access points in rural area’s of India. In case if the smart Villages
implementation what will be the percentage of increase to each segment that we can verify as the first step.
5. Propose solutions to manage the stakeholders and method of implementation

To do a detailed analysis first we need to collect the involved process details for a smart village.

All the above process requires internet. Still there are few processes which will need Bluetooth kind of
connectivity and the data points may differ based on their usage. We can segregate the data points to be used
from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Cellular and derive the weightage.

We can determine the raise in

usage based on the usage out of 5
Home and
  Social Agriculture Utilities total
Cyber Café 3 3 2 8
Mobile Phone 4 4 2 10
Home 4 4 4 12
Friends Home 2 2 3 7
Other Public installed Computer 3 4 3 10
Post office 1 1 1 3

We do categorize the network usage and amount of technology utilization can be found by this segregation and
can be informed to government to concentrate on which service. The government entities based on the
outcome will work on providing agricultural support and communication support during the transformation. We
also can give the data of which sectors requires more connectivity service.

IoT Required Process out of 5 Wi-Fi Bluetooth Cellular

Smart Education 3 4 3 10 Social
Smart Security 4 1 4 9
Smart Infotainment 3 1 3 7 8.666667
Smart Governance 3 4 4 11 Agriculture

Smart Inventory 4 1 4 9

management 2 4 2 8 Home
Utilities 4 1 2 7
Smart House/Village 4 1 4 9
Smart Energy 3 3 2 8 10.66667

From the above table, where we have compared the average use of network service and their mode of
connection also. The agriculture sectors uses more of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular network in case if the smart
technology been implemented. The smart farming requires Bluetooth technology, Smart irrigation requires the
more of cellular data and the Wi-Fi data. And more importantly the inventory as the highest consumption.
Based on our deriving we can suggest that the smart village technology requires to concentrate more on
agriculture and, we can suggest to the data package to be strengthen to Wi-Fi or cellar based on the same study.
Government can minimize the data usage and make new plans for communication where they need to support
the agriculture for a better communication.

Smart Security 4 1 4
Smart Infotainment 3 1 3

management 2 4 2
Utilities 4 1 2
Smart House/Village 4 1 4
Smart Energy 3 3 2
Home 34.645 23.985 26.65

In case of social we suggest the Wi-Fi and cellular will be equally utilized. In agriculture the cellular usage is
more, whereas in case of home the Wi-Fi data will be used more. So, the companies can offer variety of cellar
package which enable the IoT device more in rural areas rather than concentrating on Wi-Fi. And also we can
determine which sector will be utilizing more and based on the data bundles can be focused.

Computer 3 4 3 10 12.00%
Post office 1 1 1 3 6.00%
The Mobile usage is expected to increase by 48%. So, the network provider can establish the required
infrastructure which will support the smart transformation. For example, establishing the required receivers to
strengthen the network coverage will be the primary focus of the stakeholders.

6. Explain how the tools that you selected helped you arrive at the right decision

Have used the Multi criteria decision making tools as he has multiple parameters involved in finding out
transformation segments and its impacts of the usage. The smart village transformation involves in transforming
different segments of the rural area. And what kind of infrastructure will be required can be found out clearly.
The most competitive market of network providers will also gets benefited by this finding. A competitive
package can be provided in the market accordingly.

Overall, we can summarize that the mobile data usage will be in rural areas in case of Smart village
transformation. So the data usage can be planned according further to the usage and minimum plans can be
released by the government to support the services.
