KERATINIZATION
> is also called as cornification
> changes in keratinocytes
> accumulation of dead skin cells making fibrous
protein called as keratin (the outermost cells are
replaced by cells containing keratin)
> causes densely packed, flattened dead cells
> also occurs in hair, claws, hooves, horn and
feathers
KERATINIZATION

KERATIN is the principal product of the


cell line stratum germinativa, which is the
main constituent of feathers, hair, claws,
reptalian scales and also of the dead
outermost layer (stratum corneum) of the
dry skin of tetrapods. KERATIN has 2
recognized molecular types: the α-keratin
and β-keratin.
