Government’s initiatives for road safety during UN decade 9
for road safety

• In June, 2011 Ministry of health announced Decade Action for Road


Safety in Nepal
• In Line to the UN Global Plan for the Decade of Action for road safety
2011-2020, Nepal road safety action plan (2013-2020) was prepared in
2012.
•Reduce deaths from traffic accident by 35% up to 2015
•Reduce deaths from traffic accidents by 50% up to 2020
• Plans were formulated to address all the five pillars of road safety

Other Ad Hoc road safety circulars

• Against drinking and driving strictly introduced from 2014


• No horn regulation came into effective from April, 2015
• Regulation against mobile use was introduced 2016
• Considering the growing number of accidents highway emergency
hospital was established in 2017
• Road side assistance was also introduced 2018
• Helmet NS standard was approved in 2019

Establishment of NASA and it’s activity

• Nepal Automobiles Association (NASA) was established in 2008 to


work for Motor and Motorbike, Touring, Road Safety
• In 2011 NASA Nepal became the member of FIA and FIM
• NASA conducted First Youth for Road Safety Campaign 2012 Nepal in
presence of Jean Todt
• First national road safety conference was held in 2013 Dec
• The UN Global Road Safety Week was celebrated from 2013
• World remembrance day of road traffic victim celebrated from 2015

• Road safety national award distributed from 2013 to the
personalities contributing for road safety
• Road safety media award distributed from 2014
• Media campaign on road safety from 2015
• Road safety film festival was organized by NASA, 20 short movies
were presented by students from different colleges
• Red Cross Society involved in road safety from2015
• Second road safety conference was held in 2015
• For high level action in road safety parliamentary sub-committee was
formed in 2017

• NASA in collaboration with different stakeholders announced 2017-


2018 for Motorcycle safety year
• NASA became the member of Belt and Road International Transport
Alliances (BRITA) in 2018

• National conference on automotive engineering was held in 2019

should be strengthened in order to achieve the execute the provisions
of Transport Management Directives https://bit.ly/2I4Sr8y

resources will be recruited.

Challenges for road safety in Nepal

• The highest level of Road Safety Leadership (Institutional and Legislative)


is not clear yet.
• Lacking in effective enforcement of traffic rules
• Demanded road safety council since 2010, still not formed
• About 20 NGOs, Gos and INGos working for road safety in Nepal,
however, there is lacking in coordination between them
• Lack of road safety knowledge in road users
• Insufficient number of traffic police for effective enforcement of traffic
rules
