Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

Many of the students think that quadratic equation is difficult. It is believed

that solving quadratic equations is confusing, since there are many ways to solve

the value of quadratic equations and some of the methods do not apply to all of

the quadratic equations. This has been a problem for the students.

Understanding quadratic equations is essential for students to succeed in high

school mathematics and beyond. There is general agreement in the field that one

of the secondary mathematics curriculum's most conceptually difficult topics is

quadratics (Kazemi et al., 2015). High school students need to learn to solve the

value of quadratic equations since it links to problem-solving, physics,

engineering, and computer science. Also, it can be used in area estimations,

sports, establishing profits, education, and in space.

However, students are struggling in solving quadratic equations. With this,

the thesis writers conducted a preliminary survey to Grade 9 learners in

_________ and out of ______ learners, ____ answered that they find it difficult to

solve quadratic equations. Additionally, in 2015, the study entitled “Performance

and Difficulties of Students in Formulating and Solving Quadratic Equations”

determined that secondary students struggle to solve symbolic quadratic

equations and quadratic word problems (Didis & Erbas, 2015). In connection,
when the students use the traditional method such as factoring, completing the

square, extracting square root, and quadratic formula, students got confused in

choosing the appropriate method since traditional methods do not apply to all of

the quadratic equations, in using the quadratic formula students tend to have

errors and confusion because of the complexity in using the formula. Due to this,

the thesis writers sought strategies to fill the existing gap and were prompted to

study the Vedic method of solving quadratic equations to see its effectiveness

and facilitate learning.

Significantly, the Vedic method can be used to improve students’ learning

in solving quadratic equations. Several studies have proven its effectiveness in

improving knowledge and understanding in other subject areas. Vedic Method in

solving quadratic equations involves the first differential of the quadratic equation

equal to the square root of the discriminant is the formula to be used.

In this study, the Grade 9 learners in ________________ were chosen to

be the respondents of the study as it was found out that many of them have

difficulties in solving the quadratic equations also, quadratic equations linked to

subject areas in colleges, such as physics, engineering, and computer science.

The study will determine the effectiveness of the Vedic method in solving

quadratic equations.
