PPE Matrix for Chemical Cargo Operations

1. C/Off is to identify “Cargo Group” for the cargo to be carried on board from the “Cargo Specific Hazards and Identification of Cargo Groups” table provided in Section 17.3 of
Chemical Tanker Manual.
2. The cargo group level identified is then to be used to identify required Level of Protection (LoP) for various activities using the Table A provided below.
3. Table B provided below identifies the PPE required to be worn for each Level of Protection (LoP)
4. When more than one grade of cargo is carried on board than the PPE to be worn will be based on the particular cargo for which operations are going on. If multi-grade cargoes are being
handled simultaneously then the PPE to be worn will depend upon the cargo which is posing highest risk.
5. When on watch but not in a hazardous area or involved in an activity where a risk of exposure does not exist, all crewmembers should have as a minimum chemical gloves and chemical
goggles with them ready for immediate use.
6. This information is to be posted in public areas, main accommodation exits and in CCR.
