“ Carol ”

Todd Haynes-2016

This film tells the (almost) impossible love story of two women of different ages and
backgrounds in the 1950s. There is a shy woman who has difficulty finding a place
in society. She is not fulfilled in her work as a saleswoman in a large toy store or in
her romantic relationship with her engaged men Richard. On the other hand, what
she loves is taking pictures of her daily life. Carol is an elegant, middle class
woman who is married to a toxic man. Carol is older than Therese. Carol and
Harge, her husband are going through a divorce. Carol only finds comfort in her
daughter Rindy and her friend Habby, with whom she previously had a romantic
relationship. Carol always knew she loved women, but in the 1950s a woman still
depended on her husband.

As Christmas approaches, Carol goes to get a present for her daughter. She meets
Therese (the toy store saleswoman) who give an electric train to her because the
doll which Therese wanted was not available. Love at first sight is immediate
between the two women. Carol forgets her gloves on the counter intentionally, it will
be an opportunity for the two women to see each other again. Carol had left her
address and phone number on the counter before leaving. Few day later Therese
goes to Carol to give her gloves back. Therefore Carol proposes to Therese to meet
again. Carol's husband, began to suspect the hidden story of the two women.
Carol, because of Therese's many visits, suggested that Therese go on a trip with
her for a few days because they is alone a Christmas Eve. During this trip the two
women fall madly in love. Carole's husband, knowing the love story between the
two women, spy inside the two women's hotel room. Seeing the next day the spy
Carol, was devastated and therefore decides to let the day pass but to leave the
same evening while Therese sleeps. Carol left her a note telling her that she did not
want to continue this story and that it was too dangerous for her. Therefore Carol
sent her friend Habby to pick up Therese at the hotel. Carol's ex-husband, also
being devastated but above all very angry with his ex-wife, decided to ask for sole
custody of their daughter. Carol, get a lawyer. Obviously the lawyer was unable to
help her because homosexuality was the reason for requesting sole custody. As
homosexuality was considered as a mental illness, Carol is not in "ability" to take
care of her daughter. Her husband's goal in doing this is to bring her back, but Carol
stands up and explains that she no longer wants to hide her homosexuality. She
wants to live freely even if because of her she should not see as regularly as
before. she asks for visitation rights. Carol is released and no longer hides her
homosexuality, so she decides to contact Therese again and when the time is right,
Therese is distant and a little nervous, so she decides to leave and join her friends,
leaving Carol alone at the restaurant. Carol is understanding. Therese reconsiders
her descion and decides to go back to see Carol because she realizes she only
loves Carol. The final scene is when the two women look into each other's eyes.
