Activity 1:
Understanding Special and Inclusive Education
Instruction:
Answer the following questions in not more than five sentences. Cite the references using APA
7th edition.

1. What is inclusive education?

• According to Suzanne Kirschner in book Sage Encyclopedia of Classroom Management,
inclusive education is an approach to schooling in which students with many different kinds of
disabilities and learning needs are educated in classes with non-disabled and typically developing
students. In an inclusive arrangement, students who need additional supports and services spend
most of their time with their non-disabled peers rather than in separate classrooms or schools.
The term “inclusive education” is most often used to mean the inclusion of persons with physical
and mental impairments, such as sensory or mobility limitations, intellectual disabilities, learning
disabilities, language disorders, behavior disorders and autism spectrum disorders. (Kirschner,
2015)

2. What is special education?

• The term “special education” encompasses educational programs that serve children with
mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities. In practical terms, special education is
largely defined by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or the IDEA, which
guarantees a “free, appropriate public education” to children with disabilities and mandates that,
to the maximum extent appropriate, they be educated with their nondisabled peers in the least
restrictive environment. (Ansell, 2004)

3. What do you think is the importance of learning Special and Inclusive Education?
• For me the importance of learning special and inclusive education is to understand and
accept students who they are. This means not just helping them overcome their weaknesses but
assisting them in finding and developing their talents too. As a future educator, I can provide
plenty of motivation and encouragement to them. Also to known the values diversity and the
unique contributions of each student brings to the classroom.
