Technical Specification - Pile Load Test (Pull-out & Lateral) Date : 15-03-2019

2. Description of Structure
Foundations for the modules mounting structures shall be suitably anchored into the sub-grade
to take care of uplift load, lateral load and the overturning moment if any. Primary loads
effecting the foundation are dead loads and wind loads. Depth of anchoring depends upon the
soil type available at site.

3. Construction of Pile / Rod Foundation

Following steps are adopted to cast a pile:

Step-I Drilling a bore hole into the ground for mentioned diameter and depth.
Step-II Placing the steel leg inside the borehole.
Step-III Concreting the bore hole and providing collar/pedestal of mentioned
height.
Step-IV Curing of concrete to be done

4. Testing of Pile / Rod Foundation

 Test shall be carried out as per ASTM D3689-07 & ASTM D3966-07.
 Piles shall be tested for Pull out & Lateral loads as per mentioned loads on layout drawing.

5. Description of Pile Load Test (For Concrete Pile and Ramming)

Safe load on the piles can be determined by carrying out the Tests. Numbers and locations at
which these tests shall be carried out are shown in drawing number SWLB-SAOM-VNM-104MWp-
C-DOC-PTPMS-206.
Pull out & Lateral load test shall be carried out in accordance with codes mentioned in clause
1.3.

For Testing, arrangements help may be derived from ASTM D3689-07 & ASTM D3966-07. Load
application should be through hydraulic jack. Gauges shall be positioned appropriately to
measure the deflections.

Pull out test shall be performed until failure that is until complete extraction of the pile or 200%
of the service/safe load value, whichever is achieved earlier.

Lateral load test shall not be performed until failure. This test shall be carried out upto load
twice the service/safe load values as given in drawing no. SWLB-SAOM-VNM-104MWp-C-DOC-
PTPMS-206.

6. Failure Criteria

A. Pull-out Failure Criteria:

The pile is considered as failure when the pile is pulled out from the soil by (Ø/10) 30 mm
during the application of uplift force.
B. Lateral Failure Criteria:
The pile is considered as failure when the pile is deflected by 15mm from the original
position (before load application) during the application of lateral force. The deflected
position is measured at the top of pile.

NOTE: ALL PILES TO BE TESTED TILL FAILURE, TO KNOW ITS ACTUAL CAPACITY. IT WILL HELP US IN FURTHER
OPTIMISATION OF THE PILE DEPTH.

7. Pull out Load Test Procedure (For Concrete Pile and Ramming)
The force will be applied vertically at the top of the pole. The pull-out tests must be carried out
applying the following steps:

1. Increase of the load from the 0% to the 25% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 10 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

2. Increase of the load from the 25% to the 50% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 10 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

3. Increase of the load from the 50% to the 75% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 15 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

4. Increase of the load from the 75% to the 100% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 20 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

5. Increase of the load from the 100% to the 150% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 20 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

6. Increase of the load from the 150% to the 170% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 20 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

7. Increase of the load from the 170% to the 180% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 20 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

8. Increase of the load from the 180% to the 190% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 20 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

9. Increase of the load from the 190% to the 200% of the service load.
After the increase, it is required to wait 60 minutes and to check that structure reaches
the balance position (no deflection further) before writing down the value achieved.

10. Decrease of the load from the 200% to the 150% of the service load.
After the decrease, it is required to wait 10 minutes and to check that structure reaches

7. Recording of Data and Presentation

The pile test data essentially concerns three variables, namely, load, displacement and time.
These are to be recorded sequentially for the tests under consideration and recorded in a
suitable tabular form along with the information about the pile. The data may be suitably
presented by curves drawn between the variables and safe loads shown on graphs. Load
displacement curve should be an essential part of presentation.
