MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR AND TESTING OF

MATERIALS

Assist. Prof. Dr. Ozan ÖZKAN

Spring 2022-2023
Introduction
Definition:

 Mechanical testing methods are a wide range of destructive and nondestructive

methods used to characterize mechanical behavior/conditions of a material.

Aim:

 Mechanical testing methods are conducted;

 to find mechanical properties of a material,

 detect flaws during operation.

Introduction
In more detail, the purpose of mechanical testing is;
 Select a material or item for an application

 Predict how a material will perform in use: normal and extreme forces

 Determine if, or verify that, the requirements of a specification, regulation, or contract are met

 Decide if a new product development program is on track

 Demonstrate proof of concept

 Demonstrate the utility of a proposed patent

 Provide standard data for other scientific, engineering, and quality assurance functions

 Provide a technical means of comparison of several options

 Provide evidence in legal proceedings

 Prevent failure of a component that would cause significant hazard or economic loss

Classification
Destructive Testing:

 This class of methods used to determine the mechanical properties of a material under different working
conditions such as;

 Loading type: static, dynamic

 Loading direction: tension, compression, bending, torsion, shear

 Loading rate: slow-rate, high-rate

 Environmental conditions: temperature

 Representative samples are extracted and testing is applied according to national / international
standards.

 Samples are sacrificed and therefore unusable after the testing.

 Important BEFORE building/manufacturing the engineering designs.

 The results are used for design purposes.

 Require relatively cheap and less-complex equipment.

Classification
Nondestructive Testing:

 This class of methods used to determine the flaws on the surface or inside of a material that is currently
in use without disrupting their structural integrity.

 Very important for;

 the quality control of products,

 failure analysis,

 prevention of the engineered systems in service.

 No samples are extracted and testing is generally applied on site.

 Samples are intact after the tests and therefore still usable.

 Important DURING the working stage of the engineering designs.

 The results are used for preventive measures.

 Mostly require expensive and high-tech/complex equipment.
