D. LESSON PROPER

Arithmetic Sequence are sequences of number that progress from one term
to another by adding or subtracting a constant value (or also known as the
common difference).

To illustrate:

In the above example, the common difference is 1 because the succeeding

term is determined by adding one from the previous term.
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

where:
a n = the nth term

a 1 = the 1st term

n = the term position

d = the common difference

Examples:

1. Find the 7th term of an arithmetic sequence given the first 3 terms 2,6,10.

Formula: a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

Given:
a1 = 2

d=4
n=7
a7 = ?
Solution:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 7 = 2 + (7 – 1) (4)
a 7 = 2 + (6) (4)
a 7 = 26

2. Find the 10th term of an arithmetic sequence given the first 4 terms 10, 19,
28, 37.

Formula: a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

Given:
a 1 = 10

d=9
n = 10
a 10 = ?

Solution:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 10 = 10 + (10 – 1) (9)
a 10 = 10 + (9) (9)
a 10 = 10 + 81
a 10 = 91

3. What is the 50th term of the sequence 1,3,5,7,9…….?

Formula: a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
Given:
a1 = 1

d=2
n = 50
a7 = ?

Solution:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a 50 = 1 + (50 – 1)2
a 50 = 1 + (49) (2)
a 50 = 1 + 98
a 50 = 99
V. ENGAGEMENT
I. WHAT DO WE HAVE IN COMMON?
(materials need: matchsticks)
1. Form squares using matchsticks.
2. Count the number of matchsticks in each square and record your observation as
No. of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
squares
No. of 4 7 10 13 16 19 22 25 28

II. WHAT IS MISSING?

Directions: Find the missing term in each arithmetic sequence.
1. 3,12,21,30,39,48
2. 8,3,-2,-7,-12,-17
3. 5,12,19,26,33
4. 2,11,20,29,38
5. -2,4,10,16,22

VI. GENERALIZATION
An arithmetic sequence is a type of sequence where a common difference between
two consecutive terms exists.
To find the nth term of a sequence, use the general rule:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

VII. EVALUATION (INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY)

Directions: Choose the letter corresponding to the correct answer.
1. Which of the following is the 10th term of the sequence 50,42,34,26……?
A. -2 B. -8 C. -18 D.-22
2. The pattern of a certain sequence is “triple it and subtract 15”. If the 2 nd term is
45, what is the first term?
A.15 B.20 C.25 D.30
3. Given the sequence 4,8,12,16,……… which of the following is the pattern or
rule that describes it?
A. multiply by 2 B. divide by 2 C. add 4 D. subtract 4

ANSWER:
1. D
2. B
3. C

4. ASSIGNMENT
Research on examples of applications of arithmetic sequence in real-life setting.
Paste the examples on a piece of paper. Elaborately explain why such examples
belongs to specifically to an arithmetic sequence.
