PRESS RELEASE

RUBGY STARS SUPPORT NEW THEATRE SHOW BROKEN TIME

Broken hearts, broken bones and broken promises - the battle for rugbys soul is about to begin! The Rugby League community is backing a brand new theatre production based on the story behind the Great Split of 1895. Written by Bradford-based MICK MARTIN (George Orwell meets Nick Hornby, but with a plus The Observer), BROKEN TIME charts the tumultuous events that led up to the historic split between the amateur and professional codes of rugby, or Rugby League and Union as we now know it. With support from the likes of Mike Stevo Stephenson, who founded the Rugby League Heritage Centre in Huddersfield and Tony Collins, author of 1895 And All That: Inside Rugby League's Hidden History the play has its roots firmly in the history of the game. Robbie Hunter-Paul, one of the worlds most recognised and successful rugby players, is also supporting the project: Its a play that has been written to entertain and educate about the history and heritage of our sport. The story of Broken Time is really interesting. Music, action, love and rugby - what more could you ask for? The story follows a fictional town and club, West Broughton, whose team is going awry. Lewy Jenkins, rising star of Welsh rugby, is lured to play in Yorkshire with the promise of a public house of his very own and a few quid besides! Lewy loves to play, and soon he loves a certain young star of the music hall Miss Bessie Lockwood! But in following his heart, Lewy finds himself drawn into a spiders web of deceit and intrigue as the bitter feud over professionalism and Broken Time comes to its historic conclusion. Mick Martin, a life-long rugby fan, says of the play: It's such a big, powerful, important, dramatic story about our common heritage and culture. Rugby is all about big personalities staking everything, summoning up all their skill strength and willpower to win the day so is drama. The play is set to tour the heartland of Rugby League, premiring at Theatre Royal Wakefield (21-24 Sept), and on to Harrogate Theatre (28 Sept to 1 Oct), St Helens Theatre Royal (4 to 7 Oct), playing its grand final in Huddersfield at the Lawrence Batley Theatre (19 to 22 Oct).
