On the first level, there are 15 bricks. On the second level, there will be 13 bricks on each side (since the
corners of the first level are shared by two sides), for a total of 4 x 13 = 52 bricks.
On the third level, there will be 11 bricks on each side, for a total of 4 x 11 = 44 bricks.
On the fourth level, there will be 9 bricks on each side, for a total of 4 x 9 = 36 bricks.
On the fifth level, there will be 7 bricks on each side, for a total of 4 x 7 = 28 bricks.
On the sixth and final level, there will be 5 bricks on each side, for a total of 4 x 5 = 20 bricks.
To find the total number of bricks in the pyramid, we add up the number of bricks on each level:
15 + 52 + 44 + 36 + 28 + 20 = 195
PUZZLE 2 SOLUTION:
At the start, all the lockers are closed. As the students begin to walk the row of lockers, each locker's
open/closed state will change based on the actions of the current student. By the time the 140th student
has completed his or her turn, some lockers will be left open, while others will be closed.
To determine which lockers are left open after all 140 students have walked the row of lockers, we need to
analyze the pattern of locker changes for each student. For example:
We can continue this pattern for each locker, keeping track of whether it is opened or closed by the end
of the 140th student's turn. After completing this analysis, we find that the lockers numbered as perfect
squares (1, 4, 9, 16, 25, etc.) will be left open, while all the others will be closed.
Therefore, the lockers that are left open after all 140 students have walked the row of lockers are those
numbered as perfect squares, specifically lockers 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, and 144 (although
there is no locker numbered 144, we included it because it's the next perfect square after 121).
