Children from this era had very different entertainment methods compared
to our generation. Firstly, they didn’t have advanced technology such as
iPhones and smart TVs fitted with games consoles.
Dominoes – This was a loved and a
favourite game to play for many people
and it is still played today. This included
rectangular blocks with different dots
on, which ranged from 0-6. In order to
play this game, you must connect the
correct blocks with the same number.
The first player to lay down all their
dominoes wins.
They were many board games played in
the 1800s and were mostly used by
middle to upper class children. A lot of
these games are still played today.
Chess, checkers and backgammon have
been played by children and adults for
hundreds of years.
Hopscotch, jump rope, rounders and
croquet were common games played by
children and were thoroughly enjoyed
as they gave endless amounts of fun.
After a while these games became
repetitive and outdated as it was
basically the same concept. Life
started to move forward as
technology was developing and over
the years more people were using
better upgraded technology.
Tiddlywinks – Most people have heard
of tiddlywinks and players use a disk
called a shooter to flip smaller disks
into a cup that sits in the middle of the
area they are playing.
Pickup Sticks – This is also a very
popular game and is still played now.
The aim of the game is to put all the
sticks into the middle and each player
takes it in turns to move a stick
without moving the other sticks. First
player to get the most sticks wins.
Cards – Card games was also another
popular game, an example would be
snap. Children would learn maths by
playing cards games as they are
educational.
There are lots of games that were played
in the 1800s and there is too many to
name but here are a couple that would
have been popular:
Marbles – Marbles have been a popular
children's game for centuries. The largest
marble was the shooter, and the smaller
ones would be used to try and hit the
shooter and the person closest to biggest
marble would win.
