L’IMPÉRATIF :

L’impératif (the imperative) is used to give orders or advice to one or

more people. The imperative only exists in the second person singular
(tu), the first person plural (nous) and the second person plural (vous).
The imperative is conjugated in the same way as the present tense, but
the subject pronouns are omitted.

2nd person singular (tu):

We conjugate the imperative in the 2nd person singular using the
present-tense, but without the “S” at the end of the 2nd person singular
for ER ending verbs.
Examples:
parler – Parle ! - Ne parle pas
finir – Finis ! - Ne finis pas
vendre – Vends ! – Ne vends pas

1st person plural (nous)

The imperative for the 1st person plural form nous is the same as the
present-tense form. This means that for -er and -re verbs and irregular
verbs we add -ons, and for ir-verbs that are conjugated like finir we
add -issons. The subject pronoun (nous) is omitted.

Examples:
parler – Parlons ! – Ne parlons pas
2nd person plural (vous)

The imperative for the 2nd person plural form vous is the same as the
present-tense form. This means that for -er and -re verbs and irregular
verbs we add -ez, and for -ir verbs that are conjugated like finir we add
-issez. The pronoun (vous) is omitted.
Example:
parler – Parlez ! - Ne parlez pas

We also use this form in polite requests.

Example:
Attendez, madame.
Veuillez-vous asseoir.

Exceptions :

L’imperatif avec les verbes pronominaux:

1. In affirmative sentences, reflexive pronouns are placed after the verb

and attached to it by a hyphen in writing. The pronoun te changes
to toi when it follows the verb in an affirmative command.
Lève-toi tot aujourd’hui?.
Allons-nous ensemble.
Asseyez-vous sur la chaise.

2. In negative sentences, reflexive pronouns appear in their usual

position before the verb.

Ne te fâche pas!
Ne nous promons pas aujourd’hui!
Ne vous asseyez pas!
