Source(s): These prices reflect current MSRP values. Depending on the retailer, prices may
vary.
Justification: Many of the models listed above contain a collection of both student,
intermediate, and professional models. Depending on the school’s needs/requirements for
instruments, some auxiliaries may not be used (for example, A clarinets may only be used if
the school has an orchestra, for solo and ensemble, etc.). Some models may exclusively be
used for marching/concert performance, as some materials used for instruments are
different from that of professional models. However, brand selections and choices of
models are up to the discretion of the player, as not one specific brand may not suit
everyone for their individual needs. Double reed instruments may be supplied by the
school in certain circumstances where students are not able to purchase or rent their own
instruments.
From Enrique: The Royal Global clarinets are just as good, in my opinion better than Buffet,
and they are only half the cost for the professional bass clarinet models, they are also
reliably in tune between all registers. I would recommend these over Buffet, due to
consistency between instruments. In my own experience, buffet clarinets and basses can be
great but they do not all play the same. High school students will benefit from consistent
tuning between registers and consistency between instruments.

Source(s): These prices are reflective of the 2021 year. Most of the instruments
are sold by Woodwind and Brasswind, a highly reputable instrument supplier.
Justification: The majority of the instruments listed are of intermediate quality. The
reason that instruments of this quality have been chosen is to provide more ease-of-use for
the student, which will better facilitate their learning than most beginner instruments.
Financially, too, it is worth the small gap in price between beginner and intermediate
instruments in regard to brass instruments. While intermediate level instruments are great
for High School students in general, programs should have some professional model
instruments for the students in their top ensembles that do not have their own quality
instruments. There is an intermediate and a professional trumpet model included; the
difference in price between intermediate and professional is small compared to other
instruments. It is well advised to have both intermediate and professional models of the
trumpet in your program.

Source(s): All of these instruments can be bought through Steve Weiss, a reputable
percussion supplier.
Justification:
A band program cannot thrive without a percussion section. Percussion provides the
backbone of most pieces and can be transferred to other areas of the arts including but not
limited to choir, orchestra, and theatre productions.
Source(s): SchmittMusic is a company that sells all kinds of music classroom supplies and
is a reliable website.
Justification: A piano is an integral part of any music classroom, whether it be a band,
orchestra, or choir room. If a school does not already have a piano, one should be
purchased from wherever, as long as it is affordable and in great condition.
2f. Marching Band Equipment (Lauren and Enrique)

Source(s):
https://marching.com/spotlight/all-about-accessories/getting-on-top-of-podiums/
https://performance.stageright.com/products/music-risers/z-800-band-riser/
Justification:
When looking for podiums, it is very important to search for podiums that are at a good
height so that the marching band is able to see the drum majors, it has to be very easy to
transport, and has to be very sturdy to keep your students safe. The minimum requirement
for those podiums to be sturdy is at least 5 feet tall. Majority of the durable and sturdy
podiums are made out of aluminum or other metallic materials that are similar. Some
podiums even come with safety bars that are able to be attached and detached to make it
very easy to store away. However, it may vary on how tall you need to have your podiums.
Some things you may have to consider is the size of the ensemble. If your ensemble is
small, you have to ask yourself if they really need to have the drum major to be so high up.
If not, they do have smaller podiums that are at least 4 feet tall but are still very sturdy and
durable and have all the safety bars that come with it.

instrument-storage-2/amp/
Justification:
Students need to be able to put their instruments in a safe place that will keep the
instruments in good condition. Students will be in other classes most of the day and would
be carrying their instruments to every class and by having somewhere to store it, it would
give them some relief especially those students who play a large instrument like tubas, low
woodwinds, etc.. This could also prevent any accidents that may happen. In the source
that is provided, it describes where to store the instruments that would keep the
instruments in good condition. These storages are very good and will keep the instruments
safe and in good condition. A classroom will go through new music constantly and it is
important to organize and store music for potential reuse. Music can get lost quickly if
there is not a place to keep it and it is cheaper than having to purchase another copy of the
same music again.

Justification: As we move into a more virtual lifestyle, we realize every day that we rely on
technology for many things. Cameras and quality recording equipment is extremely
important nowadays for submissions of recordings to competitions, live streaming
concerts, and other technological necessities. People often forget when purchasing new
technology that there are hidden purchase, like XLR Cables, in order to use technology. A
mixing board is the main way to consolidate and control all audio equipment in one space.
Yes, there are smaller boards, but at equipment is accumulated, they won’t be able to
facilitate and may need another board to do the job.
4. Memberships and Professional Organizations(FBA, ASTA, ACDA,
NAfME, etc.) — Adam W.
School District v. Personal Memberships – Which Ones & Why? (Discuss/Describe - put in
justification)
Does or should the School District pay for personal memberships? (Discuss/Describe - put
in justification)
Justification:
**For FMEA and component organization memberships, it is suggested for the school /
school district to pay for teacher memberships if the district requires MPAs and other
related events as expected students events. It is typical for students to have the
opportunity to participate in honor band auditions and festivals, which requires the music
teacher to maintain FMEA and component organization memberships.
*** FSMA is the equivalent of an FHSAA membership for athletics; it is required for all
music programs to be a member in order to participate in district/state-wide musical
activities.
5. Services
A common misconception is that pianos will always sound the same. Pianos need to be
tuned at least once a year and it is based on the type/location/condition of the piano.
Classrooms regularly fluctuate in temperature which ultimately affect the tension of the
strings. New pianos, pianos unserviced for 10+ years, need 3-4 tunings to stabilize in an
environment. To extend a piano’s period of proper tuning, purchase a piano with a
regulator and consider other services like regulation and voicing. The average cost for
tuning is about $100/hr, but please note that some tuners may have a flat rate, so do
research on local tuners.
Maintenance is crucial for supporting the arts, it is important that the school district make
an effort to allocate funds for piano services every year. Otherwise, the consequences will
be costly.

Approximately $10,000 for schools that are competitive in a formal competition setting;
staff is paid during band camp and there is a percussion staff member for the whole season.
This is typically a reasonable expectation for staff expenses of a show band.
What is a reasonable wage for each seasonal staff member? Why?
In the band program, marching staff is paid $35-$70 depending on level of education and
expectations set for each member of the staff. For example paying undergraduates
differently than graduates, and lead instructors are paid more than the rest.
In the chorus program accompanists typically have their own fees and are paid by
rehearsal, typically you can expect $50 per rehearsal and pay separately per group. For
example if your show choir and your concert choir have a rehearsal on the same day you
will pay $50 for each group. Expect to pay anywhere from $50-$100 per performance.
Source for this section is from an interview conducted by Enrique Collazo with Jose Eslava and
Eli Serrano. Directors of the music program at Lake Howell High School
5d. Clinicians (Alannah)
On average, how much should or do programs spend on clinicians? (Discuss/Describe—
include your source and who funds this)
The average amount a program spends on clinicians is dependent upon how often
clinicians are being invited into the classroom. Rehearsals with clinicians are valuable in
gaining insight on the ensemble's performance prior to concert or competition. If a
program is only working with a clinician in preparation for MPA, their ‘average cost’ will be
much less than a program that works with a clinician regularly. This can be anywhere from
$50 to $1000.
What is a reasonable wage for each clinician? Why? (include your source and who funds
this)
The amount a clinician is paid will depend on the credentials of the individual, as well as
the financial means of the program. If a clinician is a recent Stetson graduate, for example,
eager to create music with students, the opportunity is just as great for the individual as it
is for the ensemble, so the pay may not be as demanding. Rather, if Dr. Larson is being hired
to come work with the program, anywhere from $50-$200 would be a reasonable
compensation, depending on the time spent working with the ensemble. Included in the
clinicians pay should be travel and accommodation expenses.
Clinicians are often paid from the music programs account, however if you wanted to bring
in an individual out of your program's price range, you could propose the idea to your
schools administration asking for financial assistance. When discussing the topic of
clinicians with Dr. Larson, he stressed that there will always be resources (collegiate
directors) that are willing to visit as a clinician free of charge because it serves as a
recruiting opportunity for the university. So, $100 could be the standard pay for a clinician,
but as directors we should seek out clinicians that want to do it, free of charge, with
expenses for travel and lodging covered.
(Source for this section is from an interview conducted by Alannah Cullen with Dr. Andrew
Larson.)
