Choral Methods 1

Unit Plan Rationale

To choose the pieces for this program I scoured through m collection. I ve spent most of

my years as a choral singer collecting scores for my personal files. I found quite a few pieces that

could work for a middle school choral program, but I ultimately settled on Let There Be Peace

on Earth, Oseh Shalom, and We Are One. I chose the theme of Peace and Unity for a fall concert

because I think it would fit the spirit of the season. With tragedies such as 9/11 and holidays like

thanksgiving, peace and unity is a universal message that is important for the community. I also

feel that it would create great classroom discussions to guide my students into thinking inwardly

about themselves and their role in their community.

For the first piece I chose Let There Be Peace on Earth. This piece is a call for world

peace and talks about how it starts with the individual. The piece begins with two soloist and

gradually introduced more volume and power from the ensemble. By the end of the piece the

audience feels this overwhelming feeling of togetherness and teamwork for the greater good. I

think this piece would be great to discuss more in depth with the students. I would want them to

talk about why it is important for them to strive for kindness individually and how that can bring

about peace in their community. I would choose this piece for my advanced choir students

because it is in 4-part harmony.

For the second piece I chose an arrangement of Oseh Shalom. This piece is a traditional

Je ish te t that asks God for peace among their land. The te t translates to He ho makes

peace in his high places; he shall make peace upon us, and upon all of Israel. And sa Amen.

The music not only teaches of peace and love but challenges my students to perform in a minor

key. The piece requires students to use the skills they used in our canon work and their listening

skills to sing harmonies. I would choose this piece for my 2nd year choral students because they

should be able to sing in minor.

For the third piece I chose We Are One. This piece is an anthem with a gospel feel that

talks once again about the individual in the community. It talks about how we are one

community when we walk, sleep, laugh, cry, etc. What effects one individual effects the whole.

This music has a great message but is also very fun to perform. It provides an interesting contrast

to the two previous pieces. I would have the entire choral program perform this piece.

My mentor told me that Let There Be Piece on Earth may be too difficult for a middle

school program to perform because it s in SATB. I understand h the ma be difficult to

accomplish but I felt that I should include the piece anyway for the sake of the project. She

thought that my pieces were good choices for a middle school in terms of singability and

message. I will include more of my rationale for musical growth in the next revision of this

project.
