CHAPTER 2
Engaging Learners to Literature Reading
Essential Question:

How do I ensure the engagement

of my learners in my literature class?

Introduction:

Many challenges face beginning teachers like you in the real world of teaching. One of these
challenges is to engage learners in reading literature suited to them. As they say, "you can drag the
horse to the shore, but you may not push it to drink." That is true in the actual teaching. However, you
can have various ways of teaching strategies to entice the learners to love reading literary pieces.
Hence, Chapter 2, in this material, is titled "Engaging learners to literature reading."

In this chapter, you will be immersed in various criteria that you need in order to effectively
select the most appropriate literary piece for your learners. Then, you will be exposed to different
teaching strategies to engage your learners in reading literary texts prepared for them. These
strategies are also peppered with the newest variations, integrating technology, and suited to the
taste of today's elementary learners. Are you excited? Come on, read on!

In this chapter, you are expected to:

• discuss the potential criteria in selecting literary pieces;

• solve teaching situations relative to engaging learners to read literature;
• apply the different strategies in engaging learners to read literature; and
• enrich the pedagogical strategies discussed in the lessons.
