Question 2

(a) A band-pass filter has a center frequency fc of 2 kHz and a quality factor Q of 2,
determine the upper and lower cutoff frequencies, fH and fL. [7 marks]

(b) If a multiple feedback filter circuit is used to realize the band-pass filter in Part (a), draw
the circuit diagram and design the filter circuit. Assume that the maximum voltage gain
KPB of the circuit is 2. [4 + 10 marks]

(c) A voltage transfer function is given as H ( s ) = , where s = j , is angular
1 + s / ωo
frequency and o is undamped natural angular frequency. Mathematically prove that the
function is an all-pass filter. [4 marks]

Partial Solutions

Question 2

(a)
BW = fc/Q = … = 1 kHz
BW = fH – fL = 1k -- (1)
fc2 = fHfL = (2k)2 -- (2)
From (1) and (2),
 fH2 – (1k)fH – 4M = 0
− b ± b 2 − 4ac
Use formula x = ,
2a
 fH = … = 2.562 kHz
From (1) or (2),
 fL = … = 1.562 kHz

(b)
R2
K PB = =2 -- (1)
2R1
1 R2
Q= =2 -- (2)
2 R1 '
R1 ' = R1 // RB -- (3)
1
ωc = = 12566 rad/s -- (4)
C R1 ' R2
Example:
Let R1 = 10 kΩ,
From (1),  R2 = … = 40 kΩ
From (2),  R1’ = ... = 2.5 kΩ
From (3),  RB = … = 3.333 kΩ
From (4),  C = … = 7.958 nF

(c)
1 − s / ωo
H ( s) =
1 + s / ωo
1 − jω / ω o
 H ( jω ) =
1 + jω / ω o
1 − jω / ω o 1 + (ω / ω o ) 2
 H ( jω ) = = =1
1 + jω / ω o 1 + (ω / ω o ) 2
Since its magnitude is 1 for all , hence it is an all-pass filter.
