[3 marks] (b) (i) Derive an expression relating the output and input voltages for the ideal operational amplifier in Fig. QU(a). [3 marks} (b) For the circuit shown in Fig. Q3(b), with the component values Ri = 5kQ, Ry 100k, open-loop gain Ao. = 100,000, gain-bandwidth product GBP = 1 MHz, slew rate = 0.5 V/us, input resistance Ri = | MQ and output resistance Ry = 50. Calculate the following (i) Open loop critical frequency. [2 marks} (ii) Closed loop bandwidth. GBP = 1.5 MHz, CMRR = 90 dB, and SVRR = 96 dB. Fig. Q3(6) (If Vg is a sinusoidal with rms voltage of 1.41V, estimate the maximum input signal frequency that results in distortion free output. ELECTRONICS II MAY 2006 Question 4 (a) Sketch and label the I-V characteristic of a Zener diode and briefly explain what is the function of a Zener diode in a power supply unit. [3 marks} (b) Fig. Q4(b) shows the series regulator block diagram. Explain the function of each component in maintaining the output voltage (i.e. the action taken by each of the components when the output voltage is increased or decreased). Given that R = 20K, R; = 30k@ and V;= 14V, find the output voltage, V. Assuming that the current flow through Ry is very small and can be neglected, find the power ipation of Qy if the load resistance, R, = 1009. (Assume that Vee for the transistors Qy and Qe is 0.7V.) Assuming that the op-amp is ideal, determine the inductor values in a Hartley oscillator. The capacitance value C = 0.2 pF, Hartley oscillator frequency of oscillation (f) =SMHz and the feed back factor of oscillation (H) or |6| = 0.5. Sketch the Voltage Transfer Function and the output waveform of the rectifier for a sine wave input. (10 marks} (ii) A triangular waveform with Vp) = 5V and f= 1 kHz is connected to the input of the rectifier. Modify the circuit so that a triangular waveform with Vj.) = 5V and f= 2 kHz appears at the output of the rectifier. However, this method has limited dynamic range. A generally better method uses feedback to perform square root function implicitly. The input is first rectified before the computational stage, and the output is averaged by means of a filter. Given the relation as in Equation (6.1), complete the block diagram of Fig. Q6(c) to find the ms value for the input voltage, Vi.
