SIMPLE MACHINES

1. LEVER:
A lever is a simple machine that can lift an object with little effort. It is a bar that is
attached to a fixed point called fulcrum. Force or effort is applied at one end of the bar
to lift the load on the other end.
Example: Wheelbarrow, See-saw, Pair of tweezers.

2. INCLINED PLANE:
An inclined plane is flat surface that is used to move objects from a lower level to an
upper level without lifting the object.
Example: Ramp used by furniture movers and to drive wheelchairs.

3. WEDGE:
A wedge is made by joining two inclined planes together. It has a pointed edge which is
used to cut things.
Example: Axe head, Chisel.

4. WHEEL AND AXLE:


When a wheel is joined to a pole (Axle) makes a system in which both the parts move
together to make the movement easier.
Example: Skateboard.

5. SCREW:
A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. It twists in the surface and
works like as if an object being rolled up an inclined plane.
Example: Use to hold things together.

6. PULLEY:
The pulley is a machine that has a wheel with a rope or chain wrapped around it. At the
end of the rope, an object is tied that has to be lifted or lowered.
Example: Crane, Pail of water hang over a well.
