Why would a young person want to go to university these days?

Teenagers today are less likely to expect to go to university or TAFE than they did 15 years
ago. The most recent survey results reveal that now only 54 per cent of teens are aiming for
university study, and 3 per cent for TAFE, according to the Australian Council for
Educational Research.

It’s startling, but it makes sense. Teenagers can see that in our current economy, getting a
tertiary education is risky. It puts you in debt, you can’t earn as much while you’re studying,
and it no longer guarantees you a job that’s commensurate with the skills and knowledge
you’ve gained.

Looking back, as someone who was a teenager in 2010, the expectations we had for our
futures hadn’t factored in the pandemic, nor the fact that Australia hasn’t created many
technical or professional services jobs. We thought that to get a good job, all you had to do
was to work hard in school, get good marks and go to university. The formula hasn’t worked
for us.

It’s discouraging to watch my friends – bright, talented people – face rejection after rejection,
and to hear them wonder if the reason for that rejection is that they did something wrong, or
weren’t good enough. In reality, the issues aren’t personal but structural.

There’s been a 50 per cent reduction in entry-level jobs on offer since 2011. There are simply
fewer jobs to be had than there are people to fill them. That’s a third of young people whose
skills aren’t being fully utilised. Getting a degree doesn’t necessarily mean getting ahead of
the pack – according to a recent Reserve Bank paper, 30 per cent of new graduates who are
ready and able to enter the workforce don’t get a full-time job within four months of
graduating. Graduate starting salaries are getting lower relative to average salaries over time.
In 2011, the then-Vice Chancellor of the Australian National University asked, “Where are
the jobs and industries to satisfy such a well-educated population?” He postulated that
“without basic structural reform of our economy, we could end up with the best educated
shop assistants in the world". It seems his prophecy is coming to fruition. And why would
teenagers, seeing this, want to get a degree?

None of this is to say that teenagers shouldn’t aspire to further education. Tertiary education
can be eye-opening and inspiring and can help you build skills necessary in the workforce as
well as personal development. Education is not the problem. The problem is that our current
national plan is to put people who understand Wittgenstein or who can solve partial
differential equations behind cash registers.

It’s startling, but it
makes sense.”

“Teenagers today are less likely to expect to go to university or TAFE than they did 15
years ago.”
Tertiary education can be eye-opening and inspiring and can help you
build skills necessary in the workforce as well as personal development.”
It puts you in debt” 翻译成「它让你负债累

I learned from China Daily today that your
Dear leader, at the end of this
letter, I solemnly make a tiny request, that is to accept my sincerity whether you give me the
opportunity or not.
