Making Predictions: Reading Strategy
Making Predictions
Teaching Points:
Good readers activate prior knowledge before reading a new
text.
Good readers think ahead and anticipate, or predict, what will
happen while they read.
Good readers use text clues and their own experiences to
make predictions across chapters as they read longer books.
Good readers change their predictions as they gather new
evidence as they read.
Good readers use text clues and their own experiences to
anticipate how a character may act or solve a problem.

Reading Strategy:
Visualizing
Teaching Points:
Good readers use text language to create mental images in
their mind to represent the ideas they read.
Good readers use their five senses to help them make mental
images as they read.
Good readers make mental images about the characters,
setting, events, and important objects as they read, to help
them understand each element more deeply.
Good readers visualize as they read to help them predict what
will happen next or how a character may act.
Good readers create a quick sketch of important story
elements to help them recall important parts of the text.

Reading Strategy:
Summarizing
Teaching Points:
Good readers collect only the most important part of the texts
(story elements) that they read to summarize the story in
their own words.
Good readers pause throughout their reading to collect and
record important information to help them summarize what
they have read.
Good readers summarize as they read to carry important
information from one chapter to the next.
Good readers summarize before, during, and after they read.
Good readers use specific names and information when
writing summaries.
NOTE: When teaching summarizing, I do not read a new book. Instead I
use previously read mentor texts to practice summarizing together.
This allows the students to focus on the skill of summarizing, instead
of focusing on understanding a new book.
