What is Teacher Burnout?

Teacher burnout consists of 3

components; emotional
exhaustion, depersonalization, and
reduced personal exhaustion

2
Emotional Exhaustion

Feelings of fatigue when teachers feel

overextended and they become emotionally
drained

3
Depersonalization

Indifferent, impersonal, and dehumanized

attitudes towards other people

4
Reduced Personal Accomplishment

Negative self-evaluation in regards to one’s

personal work achievements and poor
professional self esteem

5
School Context
★Organizational Demands
★ Job Resources
★ SES status of students
Research
Most research shows that differing school contexts,
such as those previously stated, have a very small impact
on teacher burnout.

7
Many articles claim that
school context has a
greater impact on
teacher burnout
This can be misleading as often the data
is collected from self-related measures
and single-level analyses
School Variance
2.1%-5.4% Emotional Exhaustion
3.1%-4.0% Depersonalization
0.6%-2.0% Personal Accomplishment

9
What is it?

Transactional model of stress and coping- individuals internally dealing with

stress and applying that to the school context
