So class, I will going to discuss the Evolution of Philippine Politics from
Pre-Colonial Period up to present government in the Philippines.
We will going to talk about what happened during the Pre colonial to Spanish Occupation included there the Spanish American War and also the Philippine American War, the Commonwealth Government, also the Philippine Republic, The Martial Law Era before we go to the Recent and present time of our government. Okay, Let’s start with the Pre-Colonial Period, the pre-colonial is the time before the Spanish came to Philippines. According to the history, Barangay was the earliest form of government. In ana ka gamay ang atung government during the pre colonial period. The term barangay is came from the word balangay. During the pre colonial period, The datu ruled the government, the datu decides the rules and regulation of the country. Spanish Occupation, it was the time that the Spaniards came to Philippines. The Spanish at first viewed the Philippines as a stepping stone to the riches of the East Indies (Spice Island) dahil nga Philippines is rich in natural resources, They saw Philippines as the source of commercial. Dumating ang grupo ni Magellan na isang Portuguese na siyang naka discover sa Pilipinas. Eventually he died and his exploration did not continue but then the Spanish country did not stop in sending people one of them is Miguel Lopez de Legazpi who established the first permanent Spanish Settlement. Aside from that, isa pod sa gigamit ng mga Spaniards to conquer Philippines is the Catholicism. They use the religion Catholicism to baptized the people of the Philippines. The Spanish city of Manila was founded in 1571, and by the end of the 16 th century most of the coastal and lowland areas from Luzon to northern Mindanao were under the Spanish control. So, in ana kadalai nasakop ng mga Spaniards and Philippines. Because the government during that time was not organized kaya dali ra kaau ta nasakop sa mga Spaniards. READ THE SLIDE Kaya nga during Spanish occupation, nasakop nila ang malaking bahagi ng Luzon, Visayas, at ilang bahagi ng Mindanao pero dili tanan Mindanao because of the Moros or the Muslims in Mindanao fight for their own right and territory. So how they lead the Philippines? Of course they start with evangelization after nakuha nila ang loob ng mga Pilipino so they started sa kanilang pamumuno by paying the tax o tribute. So niabot sa time nga paying tax is not effective anymore therefore nagtalaga sila ng Governor-general ag King of Spain to ruled the Philippines. The graft and corruption was started when the time na nasakop ta sa mga Spaniards. But it doesn’t mean nga since ang governor general ang nag govern sa Philippines ay wana nilambu ang Piipinas in terms of commerce because ang Pilipinas ang nahimong center of commercial nahimong mas dominated ng Manila sa kalakalang Galleon. READ SLIDES Governor general and Archbishop for political supremacy It is being practiced even in Europe that there is a leader for the government and a leader for the church and both have different ways in terms of government. So, lahi ang pamaagi sa ilang pag dumala sa Pilipinas. So, they vied for supremacy if kinsa bajud sa ila ang toohan sa mga tao. Read the 2nd stanza in the slide So mas nahimong mas powerful ang simbahan compare to governor general. Read the 3rd stanza in the slides So mas dghan na ang leader sa church and because they have the right and power nga mamuno naan a pod silay guards, So mao toy nahimong way na mas napalawak nila ang ilang pag sakop sa Philippines. Read the slides Late 18th century- So there is a change of ideology in Europe but since Philippines kay na conquer man sa Spain so nagbabago din ang atung ideology. In terms of Education not until 1863 read the slides. Siguro kaya ang uban nga mga history ng Pre historic time or Pre Spanish era ay wla tay enough knowledge its because sineal na ito ng mga Spaniards marahil ang mga gamit sa education if there is during the pre Spanish period ay wala na. Since they have the control with the curriculum, so sila ang magboot kng unsa ray itudlo sa mga estudyante. By the 1880s many sons of the wealthy were sent to Europe to study So nay mga Pilipinos nga nay kakayahan nga magpdala ug mga student abroad doon nag start ang pagkakaroon natin ng Nationalism at patriotism because of the students who studied abroad because they saw the different political ideologies na ilang na eskwelahan na ang kind of government ng mga Spaniards sa Pilipinas during that time is hindi katanggap taggap So nationalism and a passion for reform blossomed in the liberal atmosphere. So nag karoon ng movement, and one of the famous movement is the Propaganda movement where in they did not use dahas but instead they use periodiko ang atong mga National Heroes in order na maiparating sa mga tao ang kabuktonan ng pamamahala ng mga Spaniards so naay nahitabu nga pag published sa mga klac klac nga mga periodiko at novels specifically the La Liga Filipina, Noli and El fili. ** Shocked by the arrest of Rizal in 1982, read the whole stanza… So nibalik na sa Philippines ang mga nag skwela sa Europe and they are able to talk with the Filipinos during Spanish Occupation and one of them is Andres Bonifacio. So when the time nga gidakop si Rizal nabuo ang kilusan na Katipunan so this was the time nga nag start ang Revolution ng mga Filipinos laban sa mga Spaniards. ** Read the slide in August 1896 up to the last stanza. So nagplano na ang mga Pilipino for revolt during the time how ever kaya lang it was being uncover by the Spaniards kaya instead na muatras sila, gipadayun nlng sa mga Katipuneros ang laban. ** Read the slide in December 1897, up to the last stanza. With high hopes of reforms padung sa Hongkong wla nahitabu ang gisaad sa mga Spaniards kang Aguinaldo because of that nagkaroon ng distrust ang mga Pilipino sa mga Spaniards and naa pay nahitabu nga mga clashes and panag away or pag continue sa revolution.
So let us proceed to Spanish American War
So, nihinay na ang force sa mga Spaniards and mas nikusog ang force sa uban forces like US. Tungod sa gipakita nga kamaayu sa mga Americans to the Fiipinos nakuha nila ang sympathy ang loob ni Aguinaldo para magkaroon ng reorganization of forces and that was the time nga na declare ang Independence Philippines from the Spanish colonial. Philippine American War So because of that, nakuha naba ng Pilipinas ang absolute nga Kalayaan? The answer is wala pa because nisulod nasab ang America sa Philippines and naa nasab nahitabu nga Philippine American war. ** Read the slides U.S troops had landed up to the last 2nd stanza. So still there is no sovereignty sa Philippines. Proceed to Commonwealth So, this time naa pa gihapon ang US pra iguide o wla pman gihapon nahatag ang absolute sovereignty sa Philippines. So in commonwealth time ‘read the slide-Manuel L. Quezon up to the last part which is the U.S President. Technically ang US pa ghapon ang nag governed sa Philippines. But there is an Act na isinulong ng US wherein it is endorsed by Manuel Quezon na kung saan magbibigay ng panahon sa atung country nga makapagsarili so this 10 year period was beyond opportunity for the Philippines to draft our own constitution and there by after that granting our absolute independence. During commonwealth period naay nahitabu nga World war 2. So during the early republic, after the world war 2 there is a fluidity of politics.
