What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I can choose and use the appropriate audio or video tool to properly complete my individual literacy
group role for the book Journey to Topaz.
Selected Instructional Software Tool: Spotify for Podcasters, Imovie, Stop Motion Studio, Adobe
Creative Cloud Express

Description of Software: Spotify for Podcasters is for students to freely and easily create a podcast
to share with whomever about whatever. iMovie is an application offered only on Apple devices but
it is an easy way for students to film, edit, and create short films, trailers, and movies. Stop Motion
Studio is an app that allows students to create stop motion videos all in one space, where they can
add a background or keep it as is and add music and/or narration. Adobe Express allows students to
create a video using customizable slides, adding music, videos, pictures, sounds, and more. They can
also add their own narration and easily edit the timing of everything.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
Lesson idea implementation:
For this lesson, students will begin reading the book Journey to Topaz by Yoshiko Uchida. They will
read the first three chapters prior to class. During class, they will be in Literacy Circles of 4-6, each
deciding on a role to complete individually. The roles offered are Discussion Director, Passage
Master, Connector and Illustrator, Reporter, and Diction Detective. These roles are all different, but
all work on how the student is understanding the text. After introducing the roles, students will be
introduced to the four instructional software tools for audio and video. For each role, students will
need to record an audio or video presentation to share with their groups based on the individual
role guidelines. They will plan out what they will be doing for 15 minutes, then create. They will have
roughly 30-45 minutes to create a 1-3 minute audio/video and present it to their groups for further
discussion. I will make students aware of their goals as I introduce the roles, the tools, and have
them visible to students on the board. The teacher will walk around, assisting students who have
questions and making sure students are correctly making use of their time. I will conclude this lesson
by asking students to share their audios/videos with the class and have them submit them
individually. We can then review what we learned from using the four different tools and how we
will continue to implement them in the future.
Managing student learning:  Through the use of these tools, students will shift from passive to active social
learners. They can think about what it is they want to put in the video/audio, discuss it with peers, challenge
themselves to create something using technology, and analyze the information they need to include in the
audio/video. Students will submit their plans for their audio (a transcript) or video (storyboard) before moving
on to creating. This will keep them on task and focused so they aren’t creating as they plan and miss things or
include too much.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,

or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.

Giving students the voice and choice to create an audio or a video using 4 different tools promotes
multiple means of representation, engagement, and Action and Expression. Students have the
choice of what role to take and what feels best for them to express their learning and insights from
the book. They are giving a variety of ways to express themselves and their interests, while being
able to present their content in multiple media. As the teacher, providing writing, typed, audio, and
video instructions will help accommodate all learners within the classroom.
Reflection:
I think students will learn how to create an audio response and/or video response early in their
schooling and can use their skills in future classrooms to easily share their work with teachers and
peers. Students will also be heavily involved in the whole process, giving them freedom to guide
their own learning or ask for help when needed. I look forward to sharing students’ work as a whole
class, if given permission to do so. It will be a fun way for students to see all four tools at use and can
change what and how they present in the future, or better the one they used.
