Introduction
• Bleed air provided by engines, APU or external source
• Systems that require bleed air are:
• Air conditioning & pressurisation
• Wing & engine anti-ice
• Engine starting
• Hydraulic reservoirs
• Water tanks
• Aspirated
TAT probe

• Ground Service
Connection
• Connects to
the right side
of the duct
• Max is 60 psi
for pneumatic system

Bleed Air Systems

• Engine Bleed Air
• Obtained primarily from 5th stage
of the compressor
• When 5th stage supply insufficient
High Stage Valve opens providing
9th stage bleed air
• During take-off, climb & most cruise
conditions 5th stage is adequate

• Engine Bleed Air Valves

• DC controlled by the
Engine Bleed Air switch
• Pressure actuated
• If temperature/pressure
limits exceeded the
valve automatically
closes & BLEED TRIP
OFF light illuminates
• Fan air used to pre-cool
bleed air after bleed air valve

Bleed Air Systems Forward Overhead Panel

• Isolation Valve normally in AUTO
• With the isolation valve switch in
AUTO, isolation valve position
depends on engine bleed switch &
pack switch position
• If any engine bleed switch or pack
switch is positioned OFF the isolation
valve will open
• AC power operated - if power is lost
valve remains in current position
• Prior to engine start the isolation
valve switch is normally OPEN

• Start Pressure
• Prior to engine start the duct pressure
will indicate near to zero since there
is no bleed load
• Duct pressure transmitter
• Requires AC power to operate

Wing-Body Overheat
• Overheat wire sensors
• Located at selected positions
along bleed air ducts Maximum duct temperature
along air conditioning bay,
• Used to detect excessive keel beam & APU = 124°C
temperatures - most likely
caused by a bleed air leak
but other heat sources may
exceed limits Maximum duct temperature
along wing strut & leading
• No valves close automatically edge = 154°C
if temperature limit exceeded

• Wing-Body Overheat light

• If temperature exceeds limit
WING-BODY OVERHEAT light
MASTER CAUTION lights &
the AIR COND annunciator
will illuminate
• Cannot be reset with the
TRIP RESET switch

Questions
• The engine bleed air switches are ON, left pack switch AUTO & right pack
switch OFF - what position is the isolation valve if isolation switch AUTO?
• Ans: Open - valve position is based on bleed & pack switches only (ref:
2.10.2)

• What would most likely result from a blocked fan air duct?
• Ans: A BLEED TRIP OFF due to ineffective bleed air pre-cooler (ref: Grd Ins)

• Can the illumination of a WING-BODY OVERHEAT light be reset using

the trip reset switch?
• Ans: No - temperature must drop below onset level (ref: 2.10.3)

• Is engine anti-ice available with the related engine bleed air switch OFF?
• Ans: Yes - engine TAI duct is upstream of the engine bleed air valve (ref: 2.20.3)
