a. Analyze the graphs

b. What do you notice about the shape of the graph of the quadratic
function y = ax²?
- We notice that the first parabola opens upwards (U shape) and the second parabola
opens downwards (upside down U shape).
c. What happens to the graph as the value of a becomes larger?
- In conclusion, as the magnitude of an increases, the parabola graph narrows, and as of
the magnitude of a decreases, the parabola graphs widens.
d. What happens when 0 < a < 1 ?
- The possible values of a is 0.1 , 0.2 , 0.3 or any numbers just between 0 and 1.
e. What happens when a < 0 ? a > 0 ?
- a < 0 it means that a is less than 0 in which a is all negative numbers, the parabola
opens downwards.
- a > 0 it means that a is greater than 0 in which a is all positive numbers, the parabola
opens upward.
a. Analyze the graphs
b. What do you notice about the graphs of quadratic functions whose
equation are of the form y = (x-h)² ?
- the vertices are located along the x- axis. Is the h > 0 it slides to the right, and if h < 0
it slides to the left.

c. How would you compare the graph of y = (x-h)² and that of y = x²?
- In the graph of y = x² the highest or lowest point of a parabola is the vertex. The point
of y = x² is (0, 0) , the vertex is the minimum point of a parabola that opens upward
while the parabola that opens downward has a vertex that is a maximum point.
a. Analyze the graphs
b. What do you notice about the graphs of quadratic functions whose
equation are of the form y = x² + k ?
- The vertices are located along y-axis, if k > 0 it slides to the left, and if k < 0 it slides to
the right.
c. How would you compare the graph of y = x² + k and that of y = x²
when the vertex is above the origin ? Below the origin ?
- The graph shifts upward or downward. If the graph is below the origin, or more
generally, below the x-axis, k has to be negative. If the graph id above the origin, or
above the x- axis in general, k has to be positive.
d. What conclusion can you give based on your observations?
- The graph has a vertex (0 , k) and has a y-axis symmetry since its faced upward.
a. Analyze the graphs
b. What is effect of the variables h and k on the graph of y = (x – h)² + k
as compared to the graph y = x² ?
- (y) = a (x – h)² + k where ( h, k) is the vertex of the parabola. Since different textbooks
have different interpretations of the reference “standard form” of a quadratic function
whether its f (x) = ax² + bx + c and f (x) = a (x -h)² + k are the “standard form” to
avoid confusion we will refer to f (x) = a (x – h)² + k as “vertex form” and will refer f
(x) = ax2 + bx + c its full statement.

When written in “vertex form”

 (h , k) is the vertex of the parabola, and x = h is the axis of symmetry.
 The h represents a horizontal shift ( how far left , or right, the graph has
shifted from x = 0)
 The k represents a vertical shift (how far up or down, the graph has shifted
from y = 0).
