Career Report

Introduction

• The name of the person that I interviewed was Susan Pulkowski who is
an administrative secretary at Sesame/Rockwood camps. The date of the
interview was 2/28 and I selected this person because I was considering
doing a summer working at a summer camp.
• Susan has been working as an administrative secretary for 36 years at
Sesame/Rockwood Camps.

Mission/Purpose of the Agency/Department

• The mission statement for the agency is to offer a program where


excitement, fun and progression are all part of the experience.
• The mission statement for this program is to encourage each child’s love
of learning in a consistent, safe and nurturing environment.

Clientele Served

• The clients for this agency are parents who are both working during the
summer and need a place for their kids to enjoy their summer.
• The ages of these clients would range from 28-50
• Yes, there are multiple membership options to choose from as they have
a 4,5,6,7, or 8 week membership that you can choose from.
• The kids come from their homes as their parents drop them off and then
pick them back up after the day is over.
• You must be 14 years old or younger, after 9th grade highschoolers are
given opportunities to work there instead of being a camper.

Services and Programs Provided


• They offer various different programs such as Sesame Day Camp which
is for ages between preschool and 2nd grade, Camp Rockwood which is
for kids between 3rd and 9th grade. They also offer Rockwood
Adventures Teen Travel which is for kids between 6th and 9th grade.
• Yes, there are specific facilities that they utilize to make these camps
happen. They have tons of acres of fields to play on as well as two big
buildings that are utilized for theatre and the arts.

Staffing

• There are eleven staff members who work full time and run the camp
while the rest of the staff is usually filled out by highschoolers and other
younger part time employees.
• Out of the main eleven employees there are five that are in the
recreational department.
• There are eleven full time employees and generally around 20-30 part
time employees as they use seasonal employees for highschoolers that
have the summer off.

Funding Source(s)

• Most of the funding that goes towards employee’s paychecks are through
fundraising events and tuition for the kids to participate in the camp.

Professional Issues

• She explained how the amount of effort that she has to put into being an
administrative secretary for 36 consecutive years can take a toll when
you are doing the same thing for so long. But she also explained how
rewarding it can feel when you put so much time into something that you
care about. Her insight was beneficial for me to hear as it gave me
perspective on someone who has been doing one thing for so long.
