The Past Tense

Creative Writing Task #1
Grade 11th

Directions:
1. What’s in the photo? Examine the photo that was sent to you via email. Consider all the
elements contained in this photo: characters, setting (place and time), actions, and
characters’ emotions.
2. Adopt a perspective. Decide whether you will be the main character in your photo (first
person) or someone else will (a fictional character).
3. What’s the story? Narrate the events taking place in your photo. Keep in mind that you
are relating a story or sharing an anecdote, so be natural.
4. Keep it in the past. Since you are recounting your experience or someone else’s, you
must use the past tense.
5. Having trouble to start writing? If you are, a cliché beginning to your story could be “It
was (or wasn’t) a great day.”

Be creative! Provide as much detail as possible.
