I. OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. Identify various claims in written text.


b. differentiate the types of claims; and
c. formulate a statement for each type of claim.

A. Introduction START UP ACTIVITIES
(20min)  Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of attendance

MOTIVATION
 The teacher will play lyric video entitled “When you say nothing at
all” to the students. Students will be asked to sing along with the
song.

 The students will be asked with the following questions.

Questions
1. What do you feel while listening to the song?
2. Do you think the singer has a mutual feeling with the person he’s
referring to in the song?
GOAL ORIENTATION
 The teacher will present the topic and the objectives of the lesson

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

a. Identify various claims in written text.


b. differentiate the types of claims; and
c. formulate a statement for each type of claim

What is a claim?
 Claims are ideas that a writer needs to prove in the entire text.
 It is a pieces of information based on data and documents.
 Information can be explicit or implicit.
Question
1. What is a claim?
2. Where can we get evidences to support our ideas/claims?

Explicit Information
 are information that is clearly stated on the text. It is well explained.
 a reader can easily extract in the text by simply searching
information in the text.

Implicit Information
 are information that is NOT clearly stated on the text.
 a reader can derive the information by reading what is stated in the
text and connect it in real life, your experience and stock knowledge.

Example lyric from the song


It's amazing how you can speak right to my eyes
Without saying a word, you can light up the dark
Questions
1. What did the singer feels about the action of the person he’s
referring to?
Answer – He was amazed.
2. Is his feeling stated implicitly or explicitly? How do you say so?
Answer – Explicit because he stated his feeling on the first line of the
song. He was amazed.

Example lyric from the song

The smile on your face


lets me know that you need me
There's a truth in your eyes
saying you'll never leave me
The touch of your hand
says you'll catch me whenever I fall
You say it best
when you say nothing at all
Questions
1. Do you think the singer has a mutual feeling with the person he’s
referring to in the song?
Answer – Yes.
2. What ideas can you infer from the lyric? What does the singer want
us to realize?
Answer – The singer simply want to say that “actions are louder than
voice.”
3. From your answer, are the ideas stated implicitly or explicitly? How
do you say so?
Answer – Implicitly. Although the idea is not written directly on the
lyric, the stated lines help us generate idea from it.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CLAIMS
1. Should be argumentative and debatable
2. Should be specific and focused
3. Should be interesting and engaging
4. Should be logical

 The teacher will discuss each characteristic of a claim.

TYPES OF CLAIMS
 Claims of Fact
 Claims of Value
 Claims of Policy
CLAIMS OF FACT
It is a statement that presents ideas as true or false. It is something that
has existed, exist or will exist which could also be verified using actual
evidence.
Example
Success of teaching depends upon the creativity of the teacher
 This statement can be proven true or false.

CLAIMS OF VALUE
It is a statement that presents ideas as good or bad, right or wrong, better
or worse. These claims are often influence by morals, beliefs, and
preferences.
Example
Staying with family with a limited income is more valuable than being away
earning a lot.
 This statement can be proven better or worse.

CLAIMS OF POLICY
It is a statement that presents ideas as solution to problem. The key word
is the verb should, ought and must.
Example
The government should continue to offer scholarship program especially to
the poor but bright students.
 This statement is a solution to a problem but still debatable
C. Engagement Activity 1: DEBATE!

(25min) Topic: Success of teaching depends upon the creativity of the teacher.
Direction: The class will be divided into two groups. Group will look for
information to depend their stand on the topic.
Criteria
Cooperation: 10 points
Content: 10 points
Delivery: 10 points
Note: This activity is for them to practice looking for hard and concrete
evidence.
D. Assimilation Activity 2: Fall for the right one!

(25min) Direction: The teacher will paste 3 pictures on the board; brain, heart and
hand that corresponds to each claims. One student will pick a paper from a
box then read it in front of the class. The class will pole in line in their
chosen answer.

1. Stress causes health problems. (CLAIMS OF FACT)


2. Other planets have already been visited by people.
3. Arnis is more exciting than basketball. (CLAIMS OF VALUE)
4. ASEAN integration should be made part of the curriculum.
(CLAIMS OF POLICY)
5. Following proper diet and exercise with enough rest will make you
healthy. (CLAIMS OF FACT)
6. Aspins are the most lovable pet. (CLAIMS OF VALUE)
7. Law is more encompassing profession than medicine. (CLAIMS
OF VALUE)
8. Students should wear identification card anywhere and anytime at
Gaudencio Octavio Integrated High School.
(CLAIMS OF POLICY)
9. Studies have shown that exposure to violent media is a risk factor
for violent behaviors. (CLAIMS OF FACT)
10. Marvel comics heroes are way better than any other comics that ever
existed and made. (CLAIMS OF VALUE)
