Read the situation and answer the questions in complete sentences.

1. Course 101 has many assignments and lab reports. Although students are encouraged to discuss ideas
with their lab partners, course work is to be completed independently. Student A was writing a lab
report and was running short of time. She has been rewording some ideas from web materials and
included this information in her report, however, she was rushed and didn’t save any of the URLs. Her
lab partner had talked about the results just a little to fit the pattern they were expecting. To make sure
that their lab reports were consistent, they worked together and submitted the same results.

Questions:
1. Did Student A demonstrate academic integrity? Why? Why not?

Student A did not demonstrate proper academic integrity because she was desperate and ran out of
time when writing her report. She did the most unethical thing in writing technical material, which was
to plagiarize other people’s works.

2. How should Student A show academic integrity in that work? What about her partner?

Student A should only express her own report based on her observation during their laboratory session.
She could also cite her sources from web materials to avoid plagiarizing the material and maintain her
academic integrity. Her partner should do the same, as it can be a crucial aspect when writing technical
materials.

3. What might have been done by the instructor when he/she learned about the truth?

The instructor had no other choice but to fail both students on this specific activity as they were doing
the act of plagiarizing ideas that came from the web materials.

4. If these acts of Student A and her partner continue, what will be the effects on them?’

When they can never get caught, there are instances that this will develop as a bad habit of plagiarizing
on both students. It is human nature to develop bad habits when they can never get caught doing
something unethical.
