General info about GIS : it displays the physical

location of PON elements and faults on a map
NA-F can integrate with an external GIS system to
display PON and (optionally) faults on a map, for this
the operator or Customer Projects provides a callback
script
E.g. use call back script
http://www.gis.com/callback.php?p=GPON:1-1-1-
2&f1=5&f2=20
Give GIS map URL for PON address GPON:1-1-1-2 together
with fault ID 5 and 20 (optionally)

OTDR Traces See 2 Types of Events
“Pure Attenuation” events : OTDR curve
Normal events Fiber Faults
A faults:
Fiber itself (Rayleigh backscattering)
Visual bend Attenuation*
Fusion splice
Pressured fiber
L faults:
Fiber disconnect APC/APC

“Combined Attenuation+ Reflection” events :

Normal events Fiber Faults OTDR curve
A+R faults:
Connector pairs
Fiber connect APC/UPC Reflection
Mechanical splice
Bad splice
Dirty connector Attenuation

L+R faults:
L(+R) faults cause a high attenuation (~100% LOS)
A(+R) faults cause a low attenuation, and are detected when Random Fiber break
attenuation > 1dB (eOTDR) or >3dB(OTM)
Fiber disconnect UPC/UPC

* also called “loss”

39 © Nokia 2016 ** LOS – Loss Of Signal
eOTDR Fault Diagnosis - example

Open UPC after 1:64

CUT in this case = One fiber diconnected from 1:2 splitter

=> drop from 1,5 dB to 3 dB

Reflection is stable, not strictly linked with cut

Fault Notification Interface

The fault notification interface simplifies the fault collection by the OSS client applications to perform the
following tasks:
• Request and receive through a web service the faults as detected by NA-F
• Subscribe to a JMS queue, and receive notification of new detected faults or fault state changes.
The fault notification interface is based on two northbound interfaces that support data exchange with OSS
client applications:
• a web service interface over HTTP/S
• a JMS interface for connecting to the fault notification queue
The NA-F notification interface is delivered with a set of support files designed to help you develop client
applications
Both web service and JMS notifications use the same XML structure to encode new detected faults and change
notifications
The administrator can select the fault types for which notifications are forwarded.
