IV. PROCEDURE
Facilitate review
From our lesson about reflection of light in mirrors, you have learned one of the properties of
light
1. What happens when a light ray strikes/hits a mirror?
Yes, very good! The light ray bounces off of the surface of the mirror or is reflected. This
happens because mirrors don’t allow light to pass through them.

2. Show these pictures

Do you remember this? Yes that’s a prism…

What happens when light pass through a prism?

-When light passes through a prism the different color

components of light disperse or separates, this process is
called dispersion.
What do you notice on the colors of light? – yes,,,,each color of light bends at certain
angle.
A. Reviewing previous lesson
Elicit

or presenting the new lesson

Look at this.. can you please describe the pencil. – yes
good,, The pencil appears broken or bent in the
water.

Why is this so?--The pencil looks bent in water

because of the phenomenon called refraction. This is
another property of light. If you can still remember we
had already discussed this in grade 8.

3. What is refraction?
Refraction is the bending of light when it travels from one medium to another of
different optical densities

4. Introduce the lesson

Today we will talk about refraction of light in lenses. But before we’ll proceed, let’s us read
and try to remember this terms because you will be encountering this terms as we go on our
discussion.

B. Establishing a purpose for 5. Terms to be remembered

Convex lens Focal point

C. Presenting examples/ Concave lens
instances of the new lesson
6. Show sample of lenses
• What are lenses? How do lenses work?
Lenses are transparent material made of glass or plastic that refracts light rays
and focuses (or appear to focus) them at a point and produce an image

7. Differentiate the Two Types of lenses

Lenses are of two types. Convex lens and concave lens. Examine this
(Distribute a concave and a convex lens to the class and let them examine the two
D. Discussing new concepts & lenses)
practicing new skills #1 a. Convex lens/converging lens
• It is thicker in the center
than edges.
• It forms real images and
virtual images depending on
position of the object.
• It is also called Converging
Lens because the light that
passes through it tends to
converge at a particular
point called the focal point

b. Concave lens/diverging lens

• It is thicker at the edges
and thinner in the center.
• It forms upright and
reduced images.
Explore

• It is also called Diverging

Lens because the light that
passes through it tends to
diverge at a particular
point called the focal point.

Let’s do activity 7 you can be magnified, but you will just do procedure 1-3. You are going to
locate focal point of a convex lens
E. Discussing new concepts & 8. Introduce activity 7 You can be Magnified ( procedure 1-3)
practicing new skills #2 • Divide the class into 3 groups
• Explain the objectives of the activity
• Points to remember while doing the activity

9. Perform the activity by group

• Provide them their materials

Questions
• What is the focal length of the convex lens?
• How would you describe the image formed if a distant object is used?

10. Discuss focal length of a convex lens and a concave lens

For both convex and concave lenses, the distance from the principal focus
F, to the center of the lens is called the focal length of the lens, f.

a. Concave lens b. convex lens

Explain

F. Developing mastery

G. Finding practical applications Any question?..so

living •
Elaborate

How do light rays behave as they pass through a concave lens and a convex lens?

abstraction glasses.)
