3.2.2 Medical IT System
The Medical IT system is prescribed by IEC 60364-
7-710, which specifies the necessary characteris
tes of electrical distribution systems forspecial
Uses (Part 7) and for medical locations (710). The
‘meaical11 system ts powerea wien a spectric insu-
lating transformer for medical use that has a de-
vice for continuous monitoring of insulation as
prescribed by EN 61557-8 and EN 61557-1
Clause 710.3.11 of IEC 60364-7-710 defines the
Medical IT System that meets the requirements
specified in article 710.413.1.5 as protection for
electrical separation with permanent monitoring
of the insulation resistance. The Medical T Sys-
‘tem is not mandatory, but recommended, in
group Oand 1 promises, while in group 2medieal
locations it mandatory in the patient environ
‘ment, for socket outlets and for fixed equipment.
within reach.
The Medical IT distribution system guarantees
operational continuity even in the event of a first
earth fault. In a traditional system, as in domes-
tle scenario, when a malfunction (short crcutt,
overload or dispersion) occurs, the relevant pro-
tection devices tripped. This type of tripping is
not suitable for an operating theatre: in the case
of a first fault the power supply must be main-
‘tained and not interrupted, which could be haz~
ardous since it would involve the interruption of
‘the activities of the doctor and the electrical
equipment associated with the patient's health.
Insulation menttoing device
[A Medical IT System must be powered with an in-
sulating transformer for medical use and must be
equipped with a device for permanent monitoring
of the insulation, in accordance with EN €1557-8
and EN 61557-1 standard. The insulation monitor-
ing device must meet a number of basic require-
rments:~ the AC internal impedance shall be at
least 200 ko;
+ The test voltage shall not be greater than 25V
bc;
+ The injected current, even under fault condi-
tions, shal not be greater than 1 mA peak;
+ Indication shall take place at the latest when the
insulation resistance has decreased to 50 k0.A
test device shall be provided. It must not be
possible to disconnect the insulation monitor-
ing device,
