Biogeochemical Cycles
In both the oxygen and phosphorus cycles, many residual pools and fluxes occur during natural
processes. Rock weathering releases O2 into the atmosphere, along with other elements such as
carbon. Weathering also releases phosphorus fixed in rocks in the form of inorganic phosphate ions
(PO4 3-). Phosphorus is absorbed by plants stored in soil in a process known as mineralisation, where
it is converted and utilised for plant growth. As that same plant grows and respires, oxygen is
released as a buy product of photosynthesis, where carbon dioxide and water are converted into
glucose and oxygen.
