21. The silk routes are a good example of vibrant pre-modern trade and cultural links between distant
parts of the world. The name 'silk routes' points to the importance of West-bound Chinese silk cargoes
along this route. They are known to have existed since before the Christian Era and thrived almost till
the fifteenth century. But Chinese pottery also travelled the same route, as did textiles and spices from
India and Southeast Asia. In return, precious metals - gold and silver - flowed from Europe to Asia.
22. Local government bodies exist for urban areas as well:
(a) Municipalities are set up in towns. Municipal chairperson is the political head of the municipality
(b) Big cities are constituted into municipal corporations. In a municipal corporation such an officer
is called the mayor.
(c) Both municipalities and municipal corporations are controlled by elected bodies consisting of
people's representatives.
28. A political party is a group of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in the
government. They agree on some policies and programmes for the society with a view to promote the
collective good. They seek to implement these policies by winning popular support through elections.
A political party has three components:
(a) the leaders,
(b) the active members
(c) the followers
29. Primary Sector: There are many activities that are undertaken by directly using natural resources.
When we produce a good by exploiting natural resources, it is an activity of the primary sector. This
sector is also called agriculture and related sector. Ex. agriculture, dairy, fishing, forestry.
Secondary sector: The secondary sector covers activities in which natural products are changed into
other forms through ways of manufacturing that we associate with industrial activity. This sector
gradually became associated with the different kinds of industries that came up, it is also called as
industrial sector.
Tertiary sector: These activities, by themselves, do not produce a good but they are an aid or a support
for the production process. Transport, storage, communication, banking, trade are some examples of
tertiary activities. Since these activities generate services rather than goods, the tertiary sector is also
called the service sector.
30. Unification of Italy
• Giuseppe Mazzini wanted to put a programme to unify Italy in the 1830's. To spread his goals a
secret society called Young Italy was formed.
• The responsibility of unifying Italy through war fell on the ruler King Victor Emmanuel II of
Sardinia-Piedmont, after the failure of revolutionary uprising in 1831 and 1848.
• The ruling elite thought that they would get political dominance and economic development after
the unification of Italy.
• The Austrian forces were defeated in 1859 by Sardinia-Piedmont, after a diplomatic alliance was
made with the French, by Chief Minister Cavour.
• In order to drive out the Spanish rulers from the Southern regions of Italy, in 1860, a large number
of armed volunteers under Garibaldi marched into the Kingdom of two Sicilies and South Italy.
They won the support of the peasants.
• Hence in 1861, Italy had a new king, Victor Emmanuel II.
Giuseppe Garibaldi
• When Victor Emmanuel II tried to unify Italy, he received support from Giuseppe Garibaldi in
1854.
• He was one of the most important people among Italian Freedom fighters.
• In 1934, at Piedmont, he participated in the Republican Uprising. He had joined the Young Italy
Movement after meeting Mazzini in 1833.
• He lived in exile in South America, until 1848. He had to flee when the uprising was suppressed.
• The famous Expedition of the Thousand to South Italy was led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, in 1860.
• Over the course of the campaign their numbers grew to about 30,000. They were famously known
as Red Shirts.
• The last obstacle to the unification of Italy was the papal states, which had French garrisons. An
army of volunteers was led by Garibaldi, in 1867, to fight this last obstacle, however, they were
defeated.
• Papal States finally joined Italy in 1870, when French troops withdrew from Rome, during the war
with Prussia.
OR
The 1830s were the years of great economic hardship in Europe due to the following reasons:
(a) There was enormous increase in population all over Europe.
(b) There were more seekers of jobs than employment.
(c) People migrated from rural areas to the cities to live in overcrowded slums.
(d) There was stiff competition between the products of small producers and products imported from
England where goods were made by machines as industrialisation had already taken place there.
(e) Peasants' condition was bad due to burden of feudal dues and obligations.
(f) The prices of food had risen due to bad harvest. This had resulted in widespread pauperism in
town and country.
31. Roadways still have an edge over railways because of the following reasons;
(a) construction cost of roads is much lower than that of railway lines,
(b) roads can traverse comparatively more dissected and undulating topography,
(c) roads can negotiate higher gradients of slopes and as such can traverse mountains such as the
Himalayas,
(d) road transport is economical in transportation of few persons and relatively smaller amount of
goods over short distances,
(e) it also provides door-to-door service, thus the cost of loading and unloading is much lower
(f) road transport is also used as a feeder to other modes of transport such as they provide a link
between railway stations, air and sea ports
