Chapter 1
Quality education is institutional and collective responsibility highlighting practice,

activities and policies essential for student learning outcomes. The academic

performance of students serves as one of the defining factors of quality. This shows that

it is important for the academic institution to identify the trends and influences that may

affect the academic performance of every learner and come up with policies and

strategies that are necessary in improving students ‘academic performance.

Academic performance is essential part of life of students. This will serve as guidance

in order to determine how well the students in the class. Based on the readings, the

outcome of a Maritime student’s academic performance is one indicator of someone’s

capacity to carry out task and assessments accurate, effectively and efficiently. This

study focusses mainly on academic performance of marine engineering students. In

connection to that, it sought to determine the level of academic performance of marine

engineering students in selected major subject.

In today's generation, maritime schools have its own way of making students excel and

stand out in class especially in major subject. In relation, it shows that students also

have its unique level of understanding as well as knowledge when it comes in every

single subjects. As per readings, activities outside schools are one of those that has a

great impact on how students participate in class. This includes being able to work

outside schools that has relation to school activities which will result for being able to

participate much in class.

Various studies have been carried out on the factors that affect students’ academic

performance or achievement in schools/ subject. Some of the factors identified and

reported to have affected the academic performance of students in these different

settings are: student effort, previous or prior educational performance, self-motivation,

the social-economic status of the students’, number of hours of study per day,

admission points, subject. The utility of these studies lies in the need to undertake

corrective measures that improve academic performance of the marine engineering

students. The academic performance of the marine engineering may also serve as an

evaluation of the quality of education which the institution offers to the students.

Hence, this study aims to discover the academic performance of marine engineering

students in selected major subject. The researcher use this study in order to provide

assistance to the organization in direction of implementing a more distinct way of

improving students’ academic performance.
