Convoy
Elmer Borlongan
2007

In this artwork, we could see that it had used different dull colors such as violet, orange, yellow blue and white with a
bright red on the background. It also used form to create shadows which appears to be more realistic. Different
shapes are also found in the artwork which makes the face and body of the characters to portray simple children.
Overall, it seems that the artwork is realistic and expressive at the same time, three boys crouching down giving the
other 2 boys and a girl a piggy back ride.

I feel very strange about this artwork, it feels simple, but it has a lot of meaning. It seems that they are just playing a
game called Convoy, which means the one crouching down pretends to be a vehicle and runs around the place to
make the person on top feel that he/she is on a vehicle however, looking at their facial expressions it tells a lot more
such as the position of each character in the artwork tells us the treatment and the situation of upper class and lower
class of the society. I think the artist intends it to be a deep presentation of our society when it comes to rich and poor
people.

This artwork is for us to be aware that there is an unfair treatment of how our society works where they abuse certain
people, making them do something that they do not want to do such as selling paraphernalia in order to earn money.
The red color shows that our society is a dangerous place for these things, kissing the hand of the rich man/woman to
earn his/her favor in exchange for money. This artwork shares that what you see on the outside may not seem to be
what is happening truly on their ends. Based on the smug faces of each character on the top, it represents the
treatment of the rich people over the poor.

As a member of the community there is truly an unfair treatment between those who are rich and those who are poor,
educated and mannered rich people knows how to act when there is a person in need however those who are
arrogantly rich who thinks highly of themselves and manipulates poor people getting rid of their small houses because
of the money and power that they possess are the ones who are the problem of the society.

This artwork was created by an artist named Elmer Borlongan. It was painted
at 2007, its pastel on paper painting that was also made by the same artist
and was commissioned in the “UNICEF Auction for Action event” that fetched
up to 90,000 pesos however the original painting is currently owned by Karen
Davilla. The pastel on paper painting was donated by Elmer himself in 2006
because he didn’t have enough time to paint something new that fit their
theme “Play”.
