Throughout most of this week, my supervisor, Melissa, was out of town for a conference.

Because of this, it was a pretty slow week. On Monday, we had a staff meeting. A lot of the other

employees were also unable to attend, so there were only five of us there. We did a brief review

of our groups, and I talked about how the tabling event went last week. Most of the people in

attendance are in my wellness group, so we just continued into our weekly wellness meeting

after the staff meeting. We discussed some last-minute details of the event that we were hosting

that evening. The event was a discussion about Black Queer health, wellness, and advocacy.

Before the event began, I went to pick up pizza for those who would be in attendance. Meg and I

set up the chairs, flyers, pizzas, and the sign in sheet. We had some trouble getting the television

to connect to the leader’s laptop, so she ended up just sharing the presentation from her laptop.

The event was intended to be a safe space for Black Queer folks, so Meg and I waited upstairs

until the event ended. Afterwards, I took a group photo of those in attendance and Meg, and I

helped stack up the chairs. The event had about six people in attendance and the leader, Tina,

said it went very well.

On Tuesday, we had our weekly intern meeting. Three people were missing this week, so it was

a pretty quick discussion. We talked about masculinity and patriarchy. We watched two videos

this week in which men were describing the hardships they had faced as men, but also the

expectations they had faced when it comes to “being a man”. Some of the stories they shared

were upsetting and some disturbing and hard to hear. The article that we read discussed the

patriarchy is not just the concept that all men want to control women. It is a social construct that

has been around for decades. While all women are affected by the patriarchy, not all men are a

part of it, and even women can contribute to it without knowing. This reminded me of our
discussion about feminism and defining it as equality for all genders, not just women hating men.

These definitions make understanding these concepts much easier to understand and to fix.

The rest of the week was very slow as a lot of people are out of the office this week. On

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday I mostly worked on personal assignments and cleaned up

around the office. We normally have our She Speaks meetings on Friday but the others in my

group were unable to attend. We have the graphics created for advertising and all the guest

speakers confirmed. I am looking forward to helping with this event!
