PROJECT SUMMARY

Broiler chickens is a progressive animal enterprise in the country today.

These type of chicken is raised for meat production making it really relevant all

times. It allows agriventurers to have a stable income and thus contribute to the

economy of the country. The project utilized 100 heads of 45 days broiler chickens

raised in 36-45 days at Sitio Abuyod, Brgy. Dalig, Teresa, Rizal. This project used

the Cobb 500 breed of broiler chickens purchased at farm, and it only covers up to

3 harvests.

The project has a gross sale of thirty-three thousand seven hundred ninety-

four pesos (Php.33,794.00), with total operating expenses amounting to twenty-

four thousand one hundred seventy-five pesos (Php.24,175.00). The net income

of the project is nine thousand one hundred sixty-nine pesos (Php.9,169.00). The

project has a return on investment of thirty-seven and ninety-three percent

(37.93%).

The project encounters problems such as changing temperature, lighting

management, feeding management and external predator such as cats and dogs.

To improve the conduct of the project, the student recommended the

following suggestions: Broiler industry must aim for more efficient systems of

production and marketing, in venturing to animal raising, there must be an

environment conducive to productivity improvement, feeding management should

be responsible and learned to avoid too much expenses.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Background Information

The Philippines is believed to be a well-attained self-sufficient in poultry by

being a prolific producer of poultry products. According to Department of

Agriculture (DA), there are estimated 800 million broilers that are produced

annually and in spite of the current rapid growth of population, the country’s stock

of birds continues to meet consumer demands by having restaurants and those

who are in the food business to have steady flow.

Backyard poultry raising in the Philippines has become a shared culture in

most of the local communities and places and is a valued resource being an

income provider. It provides a lot of opportunities in business, livelihood and can

be a main source of family and subsidiary income. It also plays a vital role in the

rapidly growing economy.

In the latest report from Philippine Statistic Authority (PSA), there were

total of 179 million birds as of January 1, 2022 which is 1.2 percent higher

compared with the previous year same period population which accounts 176.82

million birds wherein 29.8 of this are broiler chickens.

Broiler chickens are any chicken raised and bred specifically for meat

production. They are slaughtered when they reach slaughter weight which is

between four and seven weeks. It attracts consumers because of its characteristics

such as fast growth rate, early feathering higher qualifications of feed conversion,

and eligible flesh color.

The most common type of broiler chicken that is being raised is the ‘forty-

five (45) days chicken’. The “45-days” term is used only and became popular

because this type of broiler chicken can be slaughtered between 38 to 45 days.

Commercial growers however actually harvest their chicken at 38 to 39 days. It is

the reason why most of the poultry raisers used this breed of chicken to ensure

excellent return of investments in just a short period of time.

This narrative report of experience aims to identify the amount that

everyone needed to raise broiler chickens in backyard setting, this will present the

breed of chicken to be raised, their economic importance, impact as well their

profitability when raised. The purpose of this paper is to be able to identify possible

loopholes and decide whether a proposed plan will effectively increase profits.

Similarly, this can be used to decide between the two or more alternative

enterprises further and even to make whole farm plans. Nowadays, poultry raising

together with the entire industry is having a hard time due to the economic impact

of the pandemic. Having a poultry business is not as easy as it looks like for it

requires a large investment in terms of the needs of the business because of the

rising cost of antibiotics, feeds, labor, together with infrastructure requirements.

But to be able to project the future plans, it should be started by small ways

including backyard poultry raising.

With the increasing number of people who are engaging intimately into

any fragments of agriculture, it is possible to pave a way to eradicate food poverty

in the country as well as into the world through education of self-sufficient methods

and agricultural sciences.

Objectives of the Project

Generally, the project is mandated and required in applying the technical

know-how learned and create positive attitude towards agriculture. Specifically, it

also aimed to perform activities into real field situation. Agribusiness venture serve

as means of livelihood in the future.

It also aimed to identify the expenses raising broiler chicken as a probable

source of needed protein and income.

Specific Objectives

The following are the specific objectives in the implementation of the project:

1. To produce a backyard raised broiler chicken.

2. To identify the proper cultural and modern way of management in raising

broiler chickens.

3. To project the expenses and cost of raising broiler chicken in terms of its

feeds, nutrients, housing and different needs.

4. To establish the profile of broiler chicken in terms of its origin, biological and

physical characteristics.

5. To gross income in raising broiler chickens.

6. Asses its implication on the household, finance and project setting.

Significance of the Project

This project is significant to the students because as they start to experience

the real field setting, their response on the possible scenario that may occur will

be significant to their learning. They will also be able to identify the validity and

uses of the theoretical knowledge that they have.

Likewise, it will help them apply what they have learned from the indoor

discussions that has been provided by them which includes the proper

maintenance and control of the food, nutrients and water in raising backyard broiler

chickens.

At this time where everything including the economy face challenges

brought by the pandemic, a source of food and possible income will be beneficial

for those who only rely on farming. This will help those who wanted to venture in

agricultural business by serving as guide in expenses.

Scope and Delimitation

This project identifies the expenses in raising backyard broiler chickens.

The project is conducted at Sitio Abuyod, Brgy. Dalig, Teresa, Rizal wherein the

student chooses the area because of its suitability in terms of feed source,

temperature and environment that is away from possible stress.

The student used one hundred (100) heads of 45 days chicken that will be

raised in 38-45 days. The student will also evaluate the expenses in raising broiler

chickens by its average feed consumption and water management.

Supply and Demand Analysis

Broiler chickens are still in demand when it comes to affordable meat

product. Dressed chicken gross supply is composed of production (73.8 percent)

and imports (23.73 percent). Supply rose by six and nine percent from the previous

year from 433.11 thousand metric tons (MT) in 2021 to 463.12 thousand in 2022.

According to the inventory made by Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) as

of June 2022, total chicken inventory was registered at 186.36 million birds or a

decrease of -0.5 percent compared to stocks in the same period of previous

year. Similarly, population of native/improved chicken and layer chicken declined

by -1.6 percent and -0.2 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, broiler chicken population grew by 0.8 percent. Of the

total chicken population, native/improved chicken accounted for 43.9

percent, followed by broiler chicken with 32.4 percent share and layer chicken

with 23.7 percent share.

In terms of chicken inventory, the top regions were Central Luzon,

CALABARZON, and Northern Mindanao with a combined share of 44.5 percent to

the total chicken population. Broiler meat is popular because it is cheaper, more

versatile, and is perceived to give more health benefits than red meat.

The growth in chicken demand has been faster than other meats due to its

affordability, lower fat content, and absence of cultural and religious hindrances.

In addition, chicken is the preferred meat in fast food outlets, which is a quickly

expanding sector throughout the Philippines.

Possible Factors that can affect the Product in the Market

In spite of these advantages, the world broiler industry increasingly faces

pressure to improve its production methods, with consumers and government

citing health, environment, and animal welfare as the areas for improvement.

Demand outlook is positive for the Philippine broiler industry because of the

continuing growth in population and household incomes in the country.

There are different factors that could affect the product either positively or

negatively in the market. The subject covers the production of one hundred (100)

heads broiler chicken.

Availability of customer on harvesting period - it is raised for meat

production and is expected to be sold out after forty-five days of rearing. Chicken

meat is one of the most common foods in the area and is being patronage by the

people that is why the student choose the broiler chicken to be raised.

Price per kilo (liveweight/dressed) - the chicken meat will be sold dressed

with price amounting to Php. 160.00 – Php. 170.00 per kilogram depending on the

quantity of purchase. By assuming that the sales exceed the variable costs, each

additional unit of sales volume will increase the gross profits and net income.

Lowering the costs without impacting revenue and maintain the same sales volume

will make the profits go up.

Target Market and Location - since it is not possible to place the meat

product in the market, the student will make a pre-order ahead of the slaughter of

chickens to be able to allocate properly the orders of the client. The product was

advertised through social media stories and are negotiated through online

conversation with the client. The remaining chicken meat that wasn’t sold out yet

are placed inside the cold fridge to ensure freshness and to avoid spoilage of meat.

The heads, livers and gizzards and feet of the chicken will be sold

separately with price amounting to Php.100.00 per kilo of the feet, Php.150.00 per

kilo of the liver and gizzard, and Php.70.00 per kilo of the chicken head. It will be

packed in a plastic bag to be stored in the cold freezer prior to purchase. The

product is targeted to be sold and have an economic analysis by the end of the

month.

For a sustainable development of poultry business, a well-developed

production and marketing system is needed, because an efficient production and

marketing system can play important role in improving the poultry raising and

thereby raising the income of small poultry owners as well as traders.

It is inevitable to the industry of poultry raising to encounter problems and

other different possible factors that can affect the broiler product in the market.

Poultry meat, particularly from broiler are superior to other types of meat available

for human consumption for its tender, palatability and digestibility. Broiler meat can

efficiently and rapidly fulfill the shortage of protein requirement since it can be

produced at least possible time as compared to other meat producing animals.

But despite of its potential marketable qualities, it can also encounter factors

like physical risks occur from theft, death, deterioration of quality, wastage and loss

of weight during the finals days before slaughtering. These factors are greatly

affected by the quality of feeds given, water management, vitamins and

environmental conditions in the chicken house.

It can be observed in the market that most of the chickens in the market

were bigger than the one which small scale poultry raisers sold. It is because these

chickens that are being sold in the market undergoes genetic selection and has

need to achieve certain standards before being sold in the market.

Technical Aspects

This study discusses about the processes and activities conducted in broiler

production. It states also the materials, equipment and used in production and

other aspects regarding the purchase of stocks and feeds needed into dressing

the chicken ready for trade. Chicken house layout, size and production schedule

are all presented for the purpose of identifying the business operation.

Also, product specifications, the product processes using flowchart, the list

of expenses, tools and materials, and feed supply are enumerated with their

corresponding costs, the raw materials and fund sources are also cited.

Production Processes

Site Selection

The selection of site to perform the project was not conducted. The students

were free to choose on where they can grow and develop their stocks. The project

was conducted as Sitio Abuyod, Brgy. Dalig, Teresa, Rizal because the student

observed that the place is well ventilated, the place was wide enough and some of

the materials needed for the completion of the project were present at the area.

Construction/Repair of Brooding House

The construction of a new brooding house was done to secure the chickens

from predators such as snakes and cats. Since there is no brooding house already

available at that time, the student needed to build a newly one.

Republic of the Philippines
UNIVERSITY OF RIZAL SYSTEM
Province of Rizal
Tanay Main Campus
COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE

It has been decided to lessen the expenditures by means of using old

scraps, available lumbers/woods and nets. The construction lasted for one day and

was completed a day before the stocks arrived.

The cage built behind the proponent’s house in their backyard so that it will

not cause any disturbances to the other people who are living in the area. The

chicken house was built up and down. Old scraps like roofs and woods were

repainted and furnished to look good as new.

Cleaning and Disinfection

Cleaning was performed right after the construction of the brooding house

was finished. Since the student use old lumbers and scraps for roofing, it can be

observed from the materials that some of its parts were full of spider webs and

were covered with frass – termite droppings.

The area wherein the brooding house was placed were also full of unwanted

weeds pile of rotten leaves that’s why the proponent needs to remove all

unnecessary things around the brooding house.

Selection and Purchasing of Stocks

The strain of the stock selected is Cobb 500. The stocks were purchased at

Direct Consumer Marketing (DCM) Farm, an agribusiness that produces day old

chicks, located at Estacion, Brgy. San Guillermo, Morong, Rizal. The stocks were

comprised of 100 chicks characterized with bright eyes, active, free from diseases,

healthy, uniform in size and weighing 45-50 grams each.

Brooding

Brooding refers to the period immediately after hatch when special care and

attention must be given to chicks to ensure their health and survival. It also refers

to the rearing of chicks with an appropriate degree of heat.

On this project, artificial brooding was utilized wherein the thermal radiation

from the heat source which is the bulb is used to provide a controlled and

monitored heat temperature from brooding chicks. The brooding stage lasted for

14-15 days using a small portion at the corner of the brooding house.

Since the brooding house was made to occupy 100 grown chickens, it was

too big for 100 heads of day-old chicks that’s why it has to be modified, a smaller

portion of the house was covered with plywood fixed horizontally near the cage’s

opening. The proponent also uses rice hulls to serve as floorings of the brooding

area. The area equipped during brooding was increased as the chicks increase

their weight and sizes. Four (4) 50 watts light bulb was used as a source of artificial

heat prior to the brooding of the chicks.

Growing Period

After the brooding stage, the following weeks were the period for the

chickens to grow and develop. During the growing period, the bird’s house was

adjusted to provide a well ventilated and suitable area to the growth of the chicks.

The light was also scheduled to be switched on at 6:00 PM and to be turned off at

6:00 AM.
Republic of the Philippines
UNIVERSITY OF RIZAL SYSTEM
Province of Rizal
Tanay Main Campus
COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE

The outer covering of the brooding house was also lowered and raised at

the same time period as the light to ensure the welfare of the chicks inside.

Feeding and Provision of Drinking Water

It is very important to ensure that proper feeding and providing available

water for the chickens. In poultry raising, the maintenance of the chickens is the

most significant just like the other types of farm animals.

Without proper feeding, proper growth of all types of animals cannot be

attained leading to inefficient operation and losses. On this project, the proper

feeding and watering was strictly observed. Dry feeding method was utilized,

consuming commercial feeds.

For the period of two weeks, during the brooding stage, the chicks were fed

with B-MEG® Integra 1000 (with probiotics), a chick booster manufactured by San

Miguel Corporation.

During the growing stage which started in the third week up to the sixth

week, the chickens consumed two hundred kilos of B-MEG® Integra 2000 while

the rest from the seventh to the final week, one hundred of B-MEG® Integra 3000

was consumed on those weeks.

Clean and potable water was provided to the broiler chickens. Water

dispensers were washed everyday regularly every time there is a need to change

the water. This is done so that the possible feces will be removed and to avoid the

accumulation of microorganism in the drinking water which may affect the health

of the chickens and may cause incurable poultry disease.

The project will be operated at Sitio Abuyod, Brgy. Dalig, Teresa, Rizal. It

can be observed that the place will be suitable for raising broilers because it is

away from residential areas. It is also accessible since it is along the road and has

an effective waste disposal area. The materials, supply and other needs was also

present and can be easily accessed.

Biodegradable

The waste from the broiler house will be identified as biodegradable. These

wastes will be disposed in a compost pit located at the back of the broiler house.

Non-biodegradable wastes will be recycled or sold to junkshops such as sacks,

return of investment (ROI).

Production Efficiency Indicators

Production efficiency indicators allows to identify areas for improvement,

define the sequence of improvement actions and monitor the effects and durability

of implemented actions in a company.

1. Average Gain in Weight

In determining the gain in weight of the broiler chickens, the initial weight,

final weight and the number of feeding days, the broiler chickens will be weighed

to get the body weight.

Average Daily Gain = Final Weight – Initial Weight / Feeding Days

ADG = 2.11 – 0.045 / 45 days

ADG = 2.11 – 0.045 = 2.065/45 = 0.046kg

2. Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR)

Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) represents the proportion of food that is

converted into meat and is the hardest figure to calculate accurately. It can be

identified by the total weight of feed divided by the net production (final weight

minus starting weight) to obtain the feed conversion.

FCR = Feed Intake / Average Daily Gain

FCR = 211.21 / 0.046kg = 4591.52

Problems Met

During the conduct of the project, the following problems have arisen:

1. The changing weather during the time of brooding that caused 7 heads

mortality. It was raining during night and dry during the whole day making

the weather unpredictable.

2. Poor lighting management because of unscheduled on and off of lights

using in brooding.

3. Infestation of flies (which is normal sa poultry production) but it causes

disturbances.

4. Waste disposal that is not well managed because of the availability of

materials needed to clean the area.

5. Unorganized harvesting and dressing of the chickens that brought the

proponent to sell the chicken at lower price compared to the projected price

to avoid spoilage.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and problems met, the proponent recommends the

following for the betterment of the project.

1. Prepare and anticipate the weather condition by monitoring the sky

condition during the day. Avoid poultry production during rainy season.

2. Be responsible in monitoring the light and ventilation of the brooding house

to avoid mortality rates.

3. Prepare insect controls or repellents and avoid the poultry weight to get wet

to avoid the unpleasant smell. Cover the waste pile with soil to lessen the

fly infestation.

4. Look for a place that can be used to store poultry waste like compost pit or

any waste disposal area that are not near residential houses.

5. Create a schedule based on the actual scheduled time of harvest to avoid

confusions. Plan out everything including the clients who will buy your

product.

Social Aspect

Broiler production can contribute in the fast way to earn money. Based on

the projected income on the farm and budget proposal, this project can earn more

up to Forty-two thousand and five hundred pesos (Php.42,500.00) which can be

used by the proponent to venture into another agricultural business.

This project allows the proponent as well as the other student to maximize

their skills and strength in producing livestock business and helps them utilize what

they have learned in farming. The methods and approach used by the proponent

can also be adapted by the community.

Furthermore, the project gives the idea that some farmers needed in order

to profit more in their agricultural business ventures. It can also sustain food

shortage and ensures food security because it teaches everyone the management

process in poultry business. Since poultry business is always in demand, it meets

the society’s need for an affordable meat compared to other meat products that

are produced but with high maintenance.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This farm and budget plan aims to identify the prospect amount needed

to raise broiler chickens in backyard setting, this will present the breed of chicken

to be raised, their economic importance, impact as well their profitability when

raised. The purpose of this paper is to be able to identify possible loopholes and

decide whether a proposed plan will effectively increase profits.

Similarly, this can be used to decide between the two or more alternative

enterprises further and even to make whole farm plans. Nowadays, poultry raising

together with the entire industry is having a hard time due to the economic impact

of the pandemic.

Having a poultry business is not as easy as it looks like for it requires a

large investment in terms of the needs of the business because of the rising cost

of antibiotics, feeds, labor, together with infrastructure requirements. But to be able

to project the future plans, it should be started by small ways including backyard

poultry raising.

Republic of the Philippines

The student will use one hundred (100) heads of 45 days chicken that will

be raised in 38-45 days. The student will also evaluate the expenses in raising

broiler chickens by its average feed consumption and water management.

Chicken meat is one of the most common foods in the area and is being patronage by the

people that is why the student choose the broiler chicken to be raised.

The chicken meat will be sold dressed with price amounting to Php. 160.00 – Php.

170.00 per kilogram depending on the quantity of purchase. By assuming that the sales

exceed the variable costs, each additional unit of sales volume will increases the gross

profits and net income. Lowering the costs without impacting revenue and maintain the

same sales volume will make the profits go up.

Since it is not possible to place the meat product in the market, the student will

make a pre-order ahead of the slaughter of chickens to be able to allocate properly the

orders of the client. The product was advertised through social media stories and are

negotiated through online conversation with the client. The remaining chicken meat that

wasn’t sold out yet are placed inside the cold fridge to ensure freshness and to avoid

spoilage of meat.

The heads, livers and gizzards and feet of the chicken will be sold separately with

price amounting to Php.100.00 per kilo of the feet, Php.150.00 per kilo of the liver and

gizzard, and Php.70.00 per kilo of the chicken head. It will be packed in a plastic bag to

be stored in the cold freezer prior to purchase. The product is targeted to be sold and have

an economic analysis by the end of the month.

Possible Factors that can affect the Product in the Market

For a sustainable development of poultry business, a well-developed

production and marketing system is needed, because an efficient production and

marketing system can play important role in improving the poultry raising and

thereby raising the income of small poultry owners as well as traders.

It is inevitable to the industry of poultry raising to encounter problems and

other different possible factors that can affect the broiler product in the market.

Poultry meat, particularly from broiler are superior to other types of meat

available for human consumption for its tender, palatability and digestibility.

Broiler meat can efficiently and rapidly fulfill the shortage of protein requirement

since it can be produced at least possible time as compared to other meat

producing animals.

But despite of its potential marketable qualities, it can also encounter

factors like physical risks occur from theft, death, deterioration of quality,

wastage and loss of weight during the finals days before slaughtering.

These factors are greatly affected by the quality of feeds given, water

management, vitamins and environmental conditions in the chicken house.

It can be observed in the market that most of the chickens in the

market were bigger than the one which small scale poultry raisers sold. It

is because these chickens that are being sold in the market undergoes

genetic selection
