SOCIAL -

Local - "DSWD: More than 137k persons affected by oil spill" (March 12, 2023) | CNN Philippines

The oil spill in Oriental Mindoro has affected over 137,000 people in Mimaropa and Western Visayas,
with 30,042 families affected from 121 barangays in the region. The Department of Social Welfare and
Development (DSWD) has distributed ₱10,985,250 worth of food and non-food items and started its
cash-for-work program for fisherfolk affected by the spill. The DSWD also provided financial assistance
to affected residents through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation program. The spill has

Local - “Trece Martires Vice Mayor Alex Lubigan shot dead” (July 7, 2018)

The Vice Mayor of Trece Martires, Cavite, Alex Lubigan, was shot dead on July 7th, along with his
driver, Romulo Guillemer. The two were driving in a black Toyota Hilux when another vehicle, a black
Montero, fired at them in front of the Korean Hospital on Indang Road, Barangay Luciano in Trece
Martires. Lubigan was on his third term as vice mayor and was not on the drug list, according to Cavite
police chief Senior Superintendent William Segun. Lubigan had been hounded by corruption allegations
along with Trece Martires Mayor Melandres De Sagun and other city officials. The Commission on Audit
found irregularities in the 2016 audit report of Trece Martires. Lubigan’s death comes in the same week as
the assassinations of two mayors, Antonio Halili of Tanauan City, Batangas, and Ferdinand Bote of
General Tinio, Nueva Ecija.

International - “Ukraine-Russia news – latest: Putin suffering ‘extremely heavy casualties’ in Bakhmut
‘killing zone’” (March 12, 2023) | Independent TV

UK intelligence sources state that Vladimir Putin is suffering heavy casualties in Ukraine as Russia has
made Bakhmut its main target in a winter push involving hundreds of thousands of reservists and
mercenaries. While Russia has captured the eastern part of the city and its outskirts, Ukrainian forces still
control the west of Bakhmut, leaving them able to fire at Russian lines. The UK Ministry of Defence has
called the area a "killing zone," making it challenging for Wagner forces to continue their frontal assault.
The impact of Russia's losses varies across the country, with the Eastern regions likely experiencing
deaths at a rate 30+ times higher than Moscow.

Local - “Fire razes Baguio City public market, damage estimated at ₱24M” (March 12, 2023) | CNN

A fire that broke out in the Baguio City Public Market caused around ₱24 million in damage, burning
down most of Block 4, most of Block 3, and the Caldero section. The cause of the fire is still being
determined, and no casualties or injuries were reported. The market is open except for the affected areas,
and the local government is working to relocate affected vendors to help them resume operations as soon
as possible. Kadamay, an urban poor group, called for an investigation into the cause of the fire, as they
raised concerns about the incident's effect on anti-privatization sentiments at the public market.

International - “Too late to save environment, says Green Party co-founder” (March 2, 2023) | BBC News

Michael Benfield, one of the founders of the Green Party of England and Wales, has said "it's too late" to
save the environment. Speaking at an event to mark the party's 50th anniversary, Benfield said he had
become "somewhat of a doomsayer" about efforts to protect the environment and that the "battle for the
world's environmental survival is, at this moment, lost". He argued that the solutions required were too
unpalatable for any political party to propose and that the focus now had to be on mitigation. Deputy
leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, Zack Polanski, cautioned against underestimating "the
importance of hope alongside practical action".

world living in a trouble.
