INTRODUCTION
❖ Automobiles have become vital part in our
lives. Due to this importance, they are in
huge numbers in the current fast moving
world.
❖ Apart from their advantages they
contribute to almost ¼th of the world’s air
pollution.
❖ Previous efforts in making purifiers have
resulted in only one concrete result:
Catalytic Converters
❖ They are not available in all countries, due
to the requirement of raw materials such as
gold, rhodium, and silver.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
❖ Our aim is to make a cost efficient filter
that can purify the exhaust gases of
motorcycles and auto rickshaws resulting
in considerably less amount of air
pollution in places with high population of
auto rickshaws and motorcycles.
HYPOTHESIS

❖ Our hypothesis is that the filter

designed by us can purify the exhaust
air from automobiles, thereby reducing
air pollution.
SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE

❖ We used the idea of activated carbon in the

filter process as activated carbons contain

small pores that can trap small dust particles

for the process of filtration

❖ We used the process of Titration process to

find out qualitatively the amount of CO2

filtered.

❖ We also used A4 sheets as a material for

the quantitative testing of our project.

APPARATUS MATERIALS USED
FILTER FRAME:
❖ Mild Steel Cubical Tubes
❖ Bolt Hook
❖ Paint
❖ Mild Steel Cylindrical Pipe
❖ Measuring Tape
❖ Welding Machine
❖ Steel Cutter
CARTRIDGE
❖ Aluminium Sheet
❖ Steel Mesh
❖ Activated Carbon
❖ Scissors
❖ Pliers
❖ Aluminium Cuboids
❖ Sieve
CONSTRUCTION

❖ The below blue and grey cuboids are

the inlet and outlet chamber and passages
respectively.
❖ DIMENSIONS OF CHAMBERS
L: 21cm, H: 5cm, B: 5cm
❖ DIMENSIONS OF PASSAGES
L: 18cm, H: 3.5cm, B: 3.5
WORKING
❖ All the cuboids used are hollow.
❖ The inlet chamber is close on all sides
except for the openings for the passage and for
the exhaust pipe entry.
❖ The exhaust air will enter through the
opening in the inlet chamber. From here, the
air enter enters into the three passages
randomly.
❖ Each passage is filled with activated
carbon and steel meshes on both sides
❖ The purified air from here, will travel into
the environment
OBSERVATIONS
❖ For the experiment we used types of gearless
bikes. We inserted the exhaust opening of the
bike into the filter opening. The engine was
made to rev for 5 minutes. The following were
our observations :
❖ In order to test the purification process we used
A4 paper on the exhaust pipe of the motorcycle
with and without the filter frame.
❖ On the A4 sheets we see that there is huge
amount of quantitative difference.
❖ The smell of the gas had reduced.
❖ With the help of Titration process we
chemically tested the acidity of filtered and not
filtered solutions.
❖ On the removal of the cartridge we found
many dust particles sticking to the aluminium
sheet.
RESULTS
❖ From the observations the results we inquired are
as follows :
❖ 90%-95% of the particulate matter (PM) has been
purified by the cotton cloth and carbon
❖ On the A4 sheets we see that there is huge
amount of quantitative difference. The sheet
used without the filter contains a lot of PM
while the a4 sheet used with the filter contains
zero impurities.
❖ Upon the titration process, we found that
35%-45% of the harmful gases have been
filtered (CO2, NOx, SO2).
❖ From these results we arrive at the conclusion that
the exhaust gas at whole has been purified
approximately 55%-60% of its effluents.
FURTHER SCOPE
❖ Our model was just a prototype that could be
used only for motorcycles.
❖ Our prototype was made of mild steel and a
aluminium frame cartridge.
❖ While accounting all its disadvantages to
being a prototype there is room for
improvement.
❖ The further scope of this project would be to
exploit this idea to its fullest potential so that it
can become a practical application in day to day
life for the reduction of air pollution.
